When Joey, a senior cat, suddenly began losing weight, the cause was a mystery. Owner Amanda Arrowood took him to Penn Vet, where Kathryn McGonigle (above), a specialist in feline geriatrics, narrowed the possible diagnoses. Joey responded well to probiotics and oral chemotherapy and is “back to his gorgeous self,” says McGonigle.

A study, led by Abby Alpert of the Wharton School and the Leonard Davis Institute, has linked OxyContin reformulation to a national epidemic of hepatitis C. The team’s findings are the strongest evidence so far of a relationship between attempts to reduce access to OxyContin and a rise in hepatitis C infections.

The Pentagon has released a new strategy outlining U.S. efforts in artificial intelligence, largely continuing the plans of previous administrations. Before a visit to an emergency department, health-related internet searches by patients were double the normal rate. That's the result of a study from researchers in the Perelman School of Medicine who examined consenting patients’ search histories. “Even though we’re in the early stages of this research, we’ve learned a lot about the questions patients ask before making the decision to visit an emergency department, as well as questions they have about their care after their visit,” says Jeremy Asch.

Davis of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center have found that human milk is the best diet for infants with congenital heart disease, calling it a life-saving intervention. Immune profiling, or assessing a person’s state of immune health, is important to understanding appropriate treatments for diseases. At Penn, immunologists, oncologists, and other specialists are collecting data on the immune system to be used in a wide variety of therapies. “If we can understand [the immune system], we can turn it in the patient’s favor,” says John Wherry of the Perelman School of Medicine.
