Detention report
Amnesty International releases a report revealing how administrative detention in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir is being used to hold political activists, suspected supporters of armed groups and other individuals for years without trial.

Missile defence talks
The ninth annual US Missile Defence Conference
and Exhibition is held in Washington at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center (until March 23). US missile defence team members meet to discuss key issues facing the development, testing and deployment of missile systems.

Eurozone rescue funds
A eurozone finance ministers’ meeting is held to finalise details for increasing lending capacity. Ministers failed to agree how to expand the European financial stability facility at their March 14 meeting in Brussels.

Poetry loud and clear
World Poetry Day, created by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organisation, supports poets and small publishers.

Birthday tweet
Today marks the anniversary of the creation of social networking and microblogging service Twitter. Since its creation in March 2006 and launch that July, Twitter has gained 190m users.

Rights and wrongs
Human Rights Day is marked in South Africa. On this day in 1960, police killed 69 people at Sharpeville who were protesting against the pass laws. Four days later the government banned black political organisations and many leaders were arrested or went into exile.

Afghanistan
on UN agenda
The UN Security Council meets in New York where the agenda will include adopting a resolution on the Unama mission in Afghanistan. The mandate expires on Wednesday but the council is expected to extend it by 12 months.

Canadian budget set
Jim Flaherty, Canadian finance minister, presents his budget in Ottawa’s House of Commons.

Sale of early Blake edition
A previously unknown copy of a rare book of early poems by William Blake is auctioned at Bonhams in London with an estimate of between £60,000 and £80,000. Poetical Sketches was written between 1768
and 1777.

Baltic nature trail
The Baltic Nature Tourism conference is held in Riga, Latvia, with participation from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (until March 23). “Strategies, Products, Practices” will discuss projects addressing nature protection in the context of rural development.

Fired up over biofuels
World Biofuels Markets 2011, Europe’s largest biofuels congress and exhibition, is held in Rotterdam, the Netherlands (until March 24).

Wednesday
MARCH 23

World weather outlook
World Meteorological Day takes place under the patronage of the World Meteorological Organisation, a specialised agency of the UN. It is the UN’s voice on the Earth’s atmosphere, its interaction with the oceans and the climate it creates.

Steeled for the future
The ninth International Steel Market and Trade Conference takes place at the Sunworld Dynasty Hotel in Beijing, China (until March 25). It brings together leaders of the world’s main steel associations, related government agencies, producers, consulting firms, traders and users.

Protests herald Budget
The Right to Work campaign holds protests across the UK as George Osborne, Britain’s finance minister, delivers his Budget. This is the second Budget since the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government came to power in May last year.

MARCH 24

African leaders meet
The conference of African ministers of the UN Economic Commission for Africa and the African Union takes place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (until March 29). The commission is a subsidiary body of the UN Economic and Social Council.

Growing challenges
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and the World Bank hold a conference (until March 25) on challenges and policies for promoting inclusive growth at the OECD’s headquarters in Paris.

Superyacht show
The annual Abu Dhabi Yacht Show is held at the Has Marina (until March 26) featuring outstanding power and sailing superyachts from 30m to 100m at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center

Taxing questions
The deadline expires for bank leaders to respond to actor Bill Nighy’s “Banker Challenge”. Nighy has called on bankers to visit a slum in Kenya and projects in the UK to see how a “Robin Hood tax” on transactions could raise £20bn to help the poor

Saturday
MARCH 26

Pulling together
The Xchanging Boat Race, the 157th contest between Oxford and Cambridge university crews, takes place on the Thames in a race dating back to 1829.

UAE race day
The 16th Dubai World Cup, the world’s richest day in horseracing, takes place at the Meydan Racecourse in the United Arab Emirates.

Time for change
British Summer Time, or Daylight Saving Time in Europe, starts, with clocks being put forward by one hour.
