Tuesday - March 29, 2011 From the School This Week's Query How can I stay focused if my surroundings are distracting?Notes from Sally This Week's Assembly: “Subject to Change” Improv Group We welcome your suggestions for assembly programs for next year – please feel free to send them along! Our counselor’s office will be staffed for the remainder of the year by two experienced friends of the School. Karolynn Coleman, former Upper School counselor, and Michelle Parker, alum, former teacher, and SFS parent will be sharing the time in the counselor’s office. Both will be answering the counselor’s extension (202-537-8154) but each has her own email: colemank@sidwell.edu and parkerm@sidwell.edu. Please feel free to contact them if you have any concerns or need services from the counselor’s office. We very much want your thoughts on this year’s Minimester program. Please follow this link to the questions on Survey Monkey: http://www.sidwell.edu/broadcast/action/clickthru.aspx?id=366.1326.755899.25157.8167 The link will be live for the next two weeks. The final inter-school middle school math meet for the year will be held on Monday, April 11th, which is a Professional Day for Sidwell Friends. Andrew Callard is willing to take students who would like to participate even though there is no school that day. Please contact him by this Friday if you are interested in having your child participate. From the PE/Athletics Department: There are three areas for Lost and Found items in the Athletic Center: 1. The drawers behind the information desk in the main lobby for items left in the lobby area (see a coach first). 2. The girls auxiliary coach’s office for items from girls’ locker rooms (room is locked – see a coach if necessary). 3. The boys auxiliary coach’s office for items from boys’ locker rooms (room is locked – see a coach if necessary). Please claim any items before April 1 as the remaining items will be donated to charity. Math Counts Results: Congratulations to the team of Gigi Stark (8th Grade) , Amal Mattoo (6th Grade) and Alan Zhang (6th Grade), who won 2nd place as a team at their state Math Counts Competition. Amal placed 3rd individually in the competition, which qualifies him to represent the District of Columbia (along with three other top scorers) at the National Math Counts Competition in May. Good job to the team and to their coach, Andrew Callard! And Gigi Stark has been selected to compete in the state level of the National Geographic Geography Bee. Her competition is this Friday. Good luck Gigi!Instrumental Music Notes Aladdin Pit Band: Monday 3:45-6:00 Aladdin Pit Band: Tuesday 2:30-5:45 5/6 String Ensemble: Wednesday 2:30-3:15 7/8 String Ensemble: Wednesday 12:55-1:50 Aladdin Pit Band: Thursday, Friday 3:45-6:00Choral Music Notes 7/8 Chorus Rehearsals This Week Wednesday, March 30th: Boys Ensemble 7:25 am 1st Semester Chorus Classes – Founder’s Day Rehearsal – Riversong—12:55-1:50 pm Thursday, March 31st: Girls Ensemble 3:45-4:45 pm PA Announcements Reception for 7th Grade Parents This is a reminder that there is a SFS 7th Grade Parents Reception on Friday, April 1st, from 6-8pm in Zartman House. April 7, 7:30-9 PM, in the Meetinghouse, SFS Lower School parent Claire Shipman, and author of New York Times bestseller “Womenomics” will lead a discussion on balancing the many demands of our very busy lives. Whether you work at home, in an office, as a volunteer or as the principal caregiver in your family, time has become the new commodity, and we all need help figuring out how to hoard it and spend it. Shipman wrote the book with fellow SFS parent Katty Kay, and she will share their research, as well as strategies to help parents navigate their professional and private lives. A Q&A session will follow. To arrange for babysitting, contact Pamela Kurland (pamela.kurland@gmail.com) or Rebecca Rippey (rippey@rcn.com).
