Center for Inspired Teaching Earns Recognition for Leadership in Black Lives Matter in Schools Week of Action
On March 20, the DC State Board of Education will pass a resolution recognizing the Black Lives Matter in Schools Week of Action. In particular, the Board of Education will recognize the leadership of Teaching for Change and Center for Inspired Teaching that resulted in a range of special resources and events reaching thousands of educators, students, and community members across the District. Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action (https://blacklivesmatteratschool.com/) is a national movement to affirm the lives of Black students, teachers, and families and to advocate for racial justice in education. This includes ending "zero tolerance" discipline in favor of restorative justice, hiring more Black teachers, mandating Black history and ethnic studies in the K-12 curriculum, and increased funding for counselors and other support staff. This year, Inspired Teaching explored those themes and other contemporary issues affecting Black students through an Intergenerational Speak Truth
event on Thursday, February 7 at Dunbar Senior High School and an Open Mic night on Friday, February 8 at Politics and Prose in Union Market. Thanks to all who participated in these community events. Beyond this special Week of Action and throughout the year, Inspired Teaching is committed to making sure that every child in the District gets an education that helps them to thrive, now and in the future.
Announcing Our 5 Core Elements Blog Series
Inspired Teachers embrace the practice of engagement-based education. They recognize every child’s unique, inherent potential, challenging each student to solve complex problems, collaborate, and pursue continual learning and growth. We believe that teaching and learning in schools should be built around five core elements (https://inspiredteaching.org/our-approach/) : student as expert; purpose, persistence, and action; wide-ranging evidence of student learning; joy; and mutual respect. We’ve invited five guest bloggers to share their thoughts about the five elements, and the series began this month with Vicki Davis writing about Student as Expert (https://inspiredteaching.org/5-core-elements-series-student-as-expert/) . See the Inspired Teaching Approach in Action!
Center for Inspired Teaching and the Inspired Teaching Demonstration School are jointly sponsoring a public site visit at the school on Monday, March 18 at 9:30 am. Visitors will have the opportunity to observe in classrooms, talk with school faculty, and learn more about Center for Inspired Teaching's history and current relationship with the school. The Inspired Teaching Demonstration School showcases the power of a student-centered, whole-child approach and has earned a Tier 1 rating from the DC Public Charter School Board, an exemplar school designation from the Partnership for 21st Century Learning, and accolades from education media outlets like The 74. Residency Program: Changemakers Apply Here!
We're looking forward to building our next cohort of changemaking educators in the Inspired Teaching Residency program. The final application deadlines for 2019-2020 applications -- March 10 and April 7 -- are approaching fast! If you know anyone who's been through this program, you've probably heard stories about just how exciting and transformative it can be, as teachers-in-training move through the admissions process (https://inspiredteaching.org/residency/become-a-fellow/) in time for Summer Institute, which begins in July and sets our program Fellows on a rewarding, career-long course of engagement-based education. So if you or someone you know is seriously considering that leap into Inspired Teaching, the moment is now!

Inspired Teaching wants your help in recruiting teacher candidates for our 2019-2020 Residency cohort.
