Climate change is the transformation that transforms everything -- and none of us, no individual or nation, rich or poor, can escape the urgent responsibility of this moment.

That's why I applaud President Obama's recently announced plan to reduce carbon pollution from existing power plants.

Next up, the Environmental Protection Agency will hold an open comment period where people like you can share your thoughts about the proposed rule.

I hope you'll make your voice heard.

In Maryland, our 3,200 miles of coastlines leave us especially vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Thirteen islands in the Chesapeake Bay have already been swallowed whole by rising sea levels.

So we've crafted the most aggressive plan in the country to combat climate change because we cannot become a more prosperous state, or nation, without the living systems upon which our prosperity depends.

Under Maryland's plan:

- We've set a goal to reduce pollution from fossil fueled power plants by 40%, and cut all CO2 emissions by 25% by 2020.

- We've emphasized renewable energy generation and public transportation, with the aim of becoming a zero-waste state.

- And we've done it in a way that creates 37,000 new jobs for Marylanders.

But we're all in this together, and we need national action to set standards for the rest of the country.
