Dear Friend --

Democracy is not a spectator sport where one can sit back and just give color commentary. It's an urgent and demanding participatory endeavor.

In order to make progress on the urgent issues facing our state and our nation -- making our economy work for all Americans, a broken criminal justice system -- every citizen must take a piece of the responsibility.

That's why I'm directing my campaign to register 10,000 new voters this year: To grow civic engagement in our democracy. It's an aggressive goal, and accomplishing it will take all of us working together. My campaign is planning volunteer trainings and weekends of action through the summer.

Justice Louis Brandeis said, "The only title in our democracy superior to that of President is the title of citizen."

And as engaged citizens, we have an obligation to do more than just show up one day a year to make our voices heard; it's our responsibility to also ensure our friends and neighbors have the tools they need to join us on Election Day.
