QUERY
We have so much to learn from our teachers
and from each other. How can we focus our
attention on learning? When is the right time
to talk and socialize?
3YPARENTS FROM GRADES PK, K AND 1: BREAKFAST WITH RICH
On Thursday, March 10, from 8:15-9:00 AM, parents from grades PK K & 1 are invited to the Meeting House for a casual light breakfast with Rich Lodish. This is your chance to ask Rich questions or share insights, thoughts, or feedback at the midpoint of the school year.NEW DATES FOR UPCOMING MATH CLASSES FOR PARENTS--NEXT PROGRAM APRIL 8
Due to school closures and conflicting activities and programs, the next math class for parents will be held on Friday April 8. The class will be held at 7:45 AM in the Math Lab (upstairs in the Manor House). The focus this time will be on fractions and decimals. This class is relevant to parents of students in all grades. During the class, we will discuss how fractions and decimals are taught from PK through 6th grade and what parents can do at home to help their child better understand these important topics.
On Friday May 6, we will be holding our last class of the year. We will send out further information about this class as we get closer.
We hope to see you then.
Merry and Raina

PARENTS ASSOCIATION REIMBURSEMENTS NEW RULE
Effective March 1, 2011, all Parent Association reimbursements must be submitted within 30 days of the expenditure. Please note the summarized procedures below and see the “How to Get Things Done” section of the Parents Association portal on the SFS Website for more detailed instructions:
**Download and fill out a PA Reimbursement Form (from Parent Portal, click Parents Association, and then click Forms).
**Attach ORIGINAL receipts or invoices; no copies, no faxes. Loose receipts should be TAPED (not stapled) on the back of the form, or to a blank sheet of paper so they can be easily copied. Please note that tax will NOT be reimbursed.
**Obtain signature of Division Clerk or All-School PA Presidents.
**Submit all paperwork to the PA Treasurer, Jay Dunn, who will process your request.
Thank you to the myriad of parents who take on these PA volunteer jobs and your willingness to expend your own funds to run these programs. Unfortunately, very delayed reimbursements make it impossible to budget effectively and we hope that this new procedure will allow us to allocate our PA funds more efficiently.

PA Co-PresidentsPARENT EVENT: FINDING A BALANCE WITH CLAIRE SHIPMAN
Save the date! April 7, 7:30-9 PM, in the Meetinghouse, Lower School parent Claire Shipman, and author of New York Times bestseller “Womenomics” will lead a discussion on balancing the many demands of our very busy lives. Whether you work at home, in an office, as a volunteer or as the principal caregiver in your family, time has become the new commodity, and we all need help figuring out how to hoard it and spend it. Shipman wrote the book with fellow SFS parent Katty Kay, and she will share their research, as well as strategies to help parents navigate their professional and private lives. A Q&A session will follow. To arrange for babysitting, contact Pamela Kurland (pamela.kurland@gmail.com) or Rebecca Rippey (rippey@rcn.com).REFLECTIONS FROM THE THE PA DIVERSITY COMMITTEE

Kindergarteners made 96 bag lunches for Bethesda Cares and learned how Bethesda Cares helps people in our community. First Graders made 16 pans of lasagna, over 300 sandwiches, wrapped over 100 donuts, and chopped enough vegetables to fill two bins for soup. Second Graders made breakfast bags, toiletry bags, baby bags, decorated reusable grocery bags and filled them for A Wider Circle. In addition they made two banners for the summer program and four signs for the Spring Festival. Third Graders continued to learn about recycling by visiting Montgomery County Recycling Center. Fourth Graders had their final visit to Brightwood Elementary School to read with their buddies.
FOOD, TOILETRIES, AND BABY ITEMS FOR OUR NEIGHBORS
Many thanks to all the Sidwell Friends families who donated pantry items, toiletries, and baby items for our community service projects. Our friends at A Wider Circle, Martha's Table, and Bethesda Cares were amazed at the amount donations.
WEEKEND VOLUNTEERING FOR FAMILIES IN MARCH
Weekend slots fill quickly.
A Wider Circle
Join SFS families at A Wider Circle in Silver Spring on Sunday, March 13th from 1-2:30 PM. Volunteers will help sort children’s clothing, household items, pantry foods and furniture. Your time will greatly benefit AWC’s Neighbor to Neighbor as they help families who are just leaving shelters to make a warm, safe, and comfortable home. All families welcome (ages 4 and up), PreK and Second Grade families encouraged. Please RSVP to Sara Jane Harris, sjrharris@comcast.net.
Martha's Table
On Monday, April 11th from 10 AM to 12:30 PM, we have 12-15 volunteer slots to work at Martha’s Table making and bagging donated food to feed people who are hungry throughout the city. You can even take a tour through the kitchen where you will see the enormous pot your Wednesday Veggies fill to make the famous Martha’s Table soup! All families welcome (ages 4 and up), Second and Fourth Grade families encouraged. (Families can leave earlier than 12:30 PM if they need to.) Please RSVP by March 28th to Felice Roggen at froggen@mac.com. Please do not sign up unless you can commit to the morning as this will prevent another family from using the slots.
