COHEN CONCLUDES -- There were plenty of fireworks, but no major bombshells, during Michael Cohen's historic testimony on Capitol Hill. Cohen, who spent years as a fixer and personal lawyer for President Donald Trump, accused his former boss of committing campaign finance crimes, lying about his work on a Trump Tower project in Moscow and inflating his personal wealth to suit his own interests.

But the blockbuster hearing did little to move the ball forward on impeachment, report Heather, Sarah and your Huddle host. Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and her leadership team said they're still waiting to see what the special counsel turns up. Other senior lawmakers grew defensive or largely sidestepped questions about whether Cohen's testimony changed the party's calculus on impeachment. Even liberal firebrand Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) was restrained when pressed by reporters on the issue. "The documents were just provided this morning," she said. "So we need to really go through that." WITNESS WISHLIST -- Democrats will now pursue any new lines of inquiry that cropped up during the hearing, where Cohen implicated many of Trump's family members and longtime business associates. So who will be the next witness in the congressional hot seat? Top on their wishlist is Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg, who intimately knows the company's financial dealings and was allegedly involved in a hush-money scheme to silence Stormy Daniels. Others pointed to Trump's secretary, who may have patched through an alleged call between Trump and Roger Stone. And several Democrats' questions to Cohen seemed designed to lay the groundwork to obtain Trump's tax returns.

Some Democrats also want to grill Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr., who Cohen said he briefed 10 times on the Moscow project. But other lawmakers expressed strong reservations about the idea, offering a preview of the tensions that could arise in a caucus with vastly competing interests - from moderates in GOP districts to outspoken progressives calling to "impeach the motherf---er." "Getting to family members I think is dangerous," said Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.). "Only because it gets real personal, real fast. And it risks backfiring."

HEARTBURN IN THE HOUSE - Democrats are considering a change to House rules after Republicans were able to score another surprise procedural victory on the floor Wednesday afternoon, successfully amending the background checks bill to add controversial immigration language. This is the second such victory for Republicans - an embarrassing setback for Democratic leaders - in recent weeks. Democrats will huddle for their weekly whip meeting at 9 a.m. where the question of whether to change the rules governing the procedural tactic - known officially as a "motion to recommit" - will be debated.

One potential change - floated by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer - would require Republicans give Democrats much more notice about the subject matter of the amendment they plan to offer. Currently, the minority party can reveal the content of its proposal just minutes before the vote, setting off a scramble on the House floor. SCHUMER'S DREAM JOB -- Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has his eyes on the prize. The New York Democrat, who has longed to be Majority Leader, has been aggressively recruiting high-profile Democrats to run in swing states as part of an early effort to take back the Senate, report Burgess and James Arkin. But while Schumer landed star recruit Mark Kelly to run in Arizona, Democrats have yet to score a marquee challenger in places like Maine, North Carolina or Iowa. NEOMI'S NOMINATION IN QUESTION -- Judicial nominee Neomi Rao is headed for an uncertain committee vote today. Numerous Republicans have raised last-minute concerns about Rao, whom Trump tapped to replace Brett Kavanaugh on the D.C. Circuit Court. Some GOP members are questioning her judicial philosophy and views on abortion. The nomination could still be brought to the Senate floor even if it does not receive a favorable recommendation from the Senate Judiciary Committee. But it would represent an embarrassing setback for the White House, which has prided itself on its track record on confirming conservative judges. UNATTENDED GUN -- A Capitol Police lieutenant left his gun in a bathroom in the Capitol Visitor Center complex on Monday night, and the unattended weapon was later discovered during "a routine security sweep," reports Roll Call. The department immediately began an investigation into the incident. But the newspaper points out that "this is not the first time that a case like this has come to light and under investigation in recent years," pointing to multiple instances when service weapons were accidently left in inappropriate places.
