This month, Truman announced Jenna Ben-Yehuda as our incoming President and CEO, co-hosted a national security bootcamp on the Hill, and protested the president’s declaration of a “national emergency” on the southern U.S. border. Joe Tate Joe Tate is currently serving his first term representing Michigan’s 2nd House District, a diverse community that covers part of Detroit’s Lower East Side, Grosse Pointe Park, Grosse Pointe City, and Grosse Pointe Farms. As a teenager, Tate earned a scholarship to play football at Michigan State University before joining the National Football League for two years. After the NFL, from 2009-2013, he went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps, deploying twice to Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. Tate deployed first as a platoon commander and then as a company executive officer, where he oversaw the day-to-day operations of hundreds of Marines and sailors. Following an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, he earned both an MBA and a Master of Science in environmental policy and planning, with a focus on urban planning, from the University of Michigan. Before joining the Legislature, Tate helped small businesses grow their capacity as a program manager for the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation. Incoming Truman President and CEO Jenna Ben-Yehuda This month, the governing boards of Truman Center for National Policy and Truman National Security Project announced Jenna Ben-Yehuda as the incoming Truman President and CEO. Her career draws from the core values of Truman members, with experience in national security, grassroots organizing and advocacy, and private sector management. Ben-Yehuda served for 12 years at the State Department, where she also worked closely with the Defense Department and intelligence community. After leaving government, she founded and led the Women\u2019s Foreign Policy Network. She also brings significant experience from the private sector in building a successful consulting practice. Ben-Yehuda shares Truman\u2019s commitment to political and electoral impact now and in the future, and she brings tremendous passion, experience, and vision to lead the community into its next phase. She will officially step into the role on 18 March 2019. National Security Bootcamp On Friday, 22 February, Truman co-hosted a national security bootcamp with National Security Action and Center for American Progress for around 20 Hill staffers. The bootcamp focused on top national security policy messaging and strategy. Truman members from various Hill offices presented, advising fellow staffers on Congress’ legislative and oversight role on current national security and foreign policy concerns. Speakers gave a brief overview of relevant legislation like the Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) and National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), covering the legislations’ importance and impact; they also discussed how congressional staffers can uphold democratic values as they work on national security. Other discussion topics included fighting corruption, promoting human rights, and deterring foreign interference, and participants explored case studies like Venezuela, Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea.
