JILL BIDEN'S HEALTHCARE INITIATIVE IS A WINNER (WILNJ) Wilmington News Journal, October 29, 2011 In the other editorial on this page, we lament the lack of truly good news about healthcare coming out of Washington and the states. The people responsible for running the country obviously are refusing to cooperate, to their short-term gain and to the nation's short-term loss. With that in mind, we would like to point out to Washington and to everyone else what can happen when people do cooperate. This week, a group of volunteers and concerned citizens celebrated the ongoing success of the Biden Breast Health Initiative. The program, started by Jill Biden, has reached 20,000 high-schoolers with a positive message about good health. Through Mrs. Biden's efforts and those of many other health professionals and volunteers, the Taking Care of Yourself program is now offered for free in every public, private and parochial school in Delaware. The education program teaches high-school girls about breast self-examination as the front-line defense against breast cancer. The initiative gives the girls the knowledge and potentially life-saving habits to live healthier lives. It encourages participants to share what they learn, thereby spreading the message of "taking care of yourself" to many more young women. This is exactly the kind of serious cooperation the country needs. Mrs. Biden is to be congratulated for her vision and for her efforts in establishing the program. And congratulations, too, to the many medical professionals, teachers and volunteers who made it a success. A lot of young women will be grateful for their good health.
