Election Results: The first of the three races for Attorney General this fall went to the polls this past Saturday with Attorney General Buddy Caldwell officially clinching reelection. Attorney General Caldwell, who switched parties to the GOP in early 2011, was unopposed in his reelection bid. Caldwell began the campaign season with an in-party challenge from former US Rep. Joe Cao and but unofficially won after Cao dropped out in September. Cao had launched his campaign promising to bring a real Republican voice to the Attorney General’s office but withdrew several months later after limited fundraising and campaigning. Next month should see two highly contested elections in Kentucky and Mississippi where both Attorney General Jack Conway and Attorney General Jim Hood are up for reelection against Republican challengers. In the News [5]Hood says political foe abused his office at DPS _The Jackson Clarion Ledger_– October 24, 2011 Former Public Safety Commissioner Steve Simpson billed Mississippi taxpayers $409.87 for a 2009 dinner at Miko's at the Pearl River Resort, listing state Rep. Bennett Malone, state Sen. Billy Hewes and Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney as meeting with him for a Department of Public Safety "Budget Priorities Dinner Meeting." Malone, Hewes and Chaney all told The Clarion-Ledger they did not eat at Miko's with Simpson, nor did he pay for their meals. His challenger, two-term Hopkins County Attorney Todd P'Pool, may well have a future in politics, but this campaign has revealed he is less than ready for the office he seeks. Rep. Jay Inslee, D-Wash., talked about preschool education and underperforming teachers, rather than his recent rhetorical flourishes directed at such Democratic demons as Karl Rove, the billionaire Koch brothers and Tim Eyman. Higher favorability ratings propel Attorney General Steve Bullock to a 4-point lead over former GOP Rep. Rick Hill, according to the survey by Project New West. Bullock, a Democrat, takes 42 percent to Hill's 38 percent, according to the Oct. 2-Oct. 4 poll of 500 voters.
