What a new UN Security Council will bring to the Israel-Palestine impasse

The issue of a Palestinian Statehood has been one of the most discussed topics in
the media since the day that Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas submitted his application
for full state membership in the United Nations. And although the US has stated
that it will veto any vote that supports Palestinian statehood, the American strategy
has been to line up enough no votes or abstentions in the Security Council so that
it will not be forced to use its veto to block the bid from moving forward.

President Abbas needs nine votes from the Security Council in order to proceed with
the next step which involves receiving two thirds vote from the General Assembly.
While the Palestinians' membership application is currently under committee review,
the US and its allies are anxious for a Security Council vote in the expectation
that the Palestinians will not get the votes they need, for now at least...

Russia, Belarus, and the politics of beer in Eurasia

A law signed by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in the summer of 2011 no longer
categorizes beer as food - it is now considered to be an alcoholic beverage. It
is the first law of its kind in Russia. It also sets limits on where and when beer
can be sold.

Public health advocates andfamily supportgroupshave longcriticized thepolicy that
allowed businesses tosellbeer the same way they sell soda in streetstalls, and allowed
its open consumption in public areas. It has become commonplace to see people, including
teenagers, drinking beer on the streets, in shopping areas and while taking public
transportation.

Everything will change on January 1, 2013: by law, only licensed stores are to sell
beer, and they are prohibited from doing so between the hours of 11 pm and 8 am.
Street stands, airports, bus stops, and gas stations, which now make up one-third
of all the sales of beer in the country, will be banned from selling beer altogether.

Interestingly, opposition to the measure has come from beyond those directly effected
by the measure and could affect one of Russia's foreign policy priorities, the Eurasian
Union...

Global warming, taking its toll

The changing weather patterns are having an unprecedented effect on several areas
around the world, from hurricanes and early winters in the northeastern United States,
to excessive rainfall in Central America. Especially vulnerable to these changing
patterns are developing countries that lack the resources to build infrastructure
that can properly withstand the impact of these unforeseen forces of nature. Countries
with lax regulations allowing people to build homes and other establishments in
hazardous locations are also vulnerable.

During the past few weeks, when most headlines in the media were taken up by the
U.S. presidential primaries, the European economy or the events in the Middle East,
thousands of people in Central America and Southeast Asia were struggling to survive.
This was not because of a massive earthquake or Category 5 hurricane, but rather
