Tuesday - November 8, 2011 From the School Query This week’s query: If you could go back in time and change one thing that you have done, what would you change? Notes from Sally 6th grade wellness HGD letter-1.docx Assembly: All students will see a performance of The Hundred Dresses. Northwest Current correspondents this week: Liam Susswein and Teddy Donilon Parents of students who are interested in Minimester trips are welcome to attend the meeting tonight at 7:30 in the Drama Studio. However, this is not required, and no preference is given to students whose parents attend! All are welcome for the public performances of The Hundred Dresses on Friday night at 7:30 and Saturday afternoon at 2:00. There is no charge for admission, but we recommend that you call the Middle School office to reserve a seat. A reminder of Conversations With Michelle, with Middle School Counselor Michelle Parker. This Friday’s session is for 6th grade parents – 7:45 AM in the Dining Room. The 7th grade session is next Friday, November 18th. There is a math meet for Middle School students next Wednesday afternoon, November 16th. See information elsewhere in the letter. Winter PE/Athletics began yesterday. One of the 5/6 rotations is a Health and Wellness program. As a follow up to the informational session about this Core Health and Wellness Course that occurred on October 28th information is attached about the sixth grade curriculum which half of the 6th grade students began yesterday. We ask that sixth grade parents review the attached objectives of the Human Growth and Development lessons as a guide to assist you in continuing these conversations at home. More about the curriculum can be found on the 6th Grade Main Page under Core Health and Wellness. Fifth graders will begin their rotation in about three weeks; information will be available for parents in fifth grade at that time. The first trimester ends next Friday, November 18th. Although we do not give trimester exams in 7/8, next week will be a heavy test week for many of our 7/8 students as teachers wrap up their units of study and prepare to write report cards. The schedule of special classes will change in 5/6, and arts classes will change for 7th graders beginning on Monday, November 21st. Thanks so much to Shelley Schonberger, Lisa Gunty, and the many parent volunteers who helped out with the 7/8 dance on October 28th! A special thank you and congratulations, too, to the 8th grade reps and the 8th grade students and families for their successful efforts to raise money for their class gift during Homecoming! They raised almost $1000, and the members of the class will decide on a charity to which the money will be donated as part of their closing ceremony. Other News Quaker Quotes On Listening “The skill of the listener who can go beyond words, who can even go beyond the conscious meanings behind words and who can listen with the “third ear” for what is unconsciously being meant by the speaker, furnishes a climate where the most unexpected disclosures occur, where miracles happen. Marcel Proust declaims, “The voyage of discovery lies not in encountering new landscapes, but in seeing with new eyes.” And listening with new ears. Friends are, if nothing else, seekers, searchers of the Truth and open to the wisdom of others regardless of the source. Listening is an essential art in this search; truly paying attention to the witness of Friends is central to our search.” --Excerpted from Baltimore Yearly Meeting, Listening “Quaker Quotes” is a weekly submission by Melissa Belman (melissa@ecologicflooring.com ), Holly Moore (htmoore@gmail.com ) and Cindy Terrell (ctcabin@gmail.com .
