___________________________________ Dear Hunter, Congress is moving to modernize the No Child Left Behind Act to better meet the needs of kids whose educational experiences dont live up to the laws ambitious name. Better support for rural schools in the law has been a central advocacy goal for Save the Childrens U.S. Programs and we were thrilled when reforms authored by Senators Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Mike Enzi (R-WY) were passed by the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee last month. If enacted into law, almost a quarter of annual investments in innovative models would be set aside for rural schools, existing programs that target struggling rural schools would be expanded, and a new initiative would invest in high-quality literacy programs from birth through high school. To help build support for these measures, we wrote op-eds in The Tennessean ( http://e2ma.net/go/7633029661/207373530/227074924/1365043/goto:http://www.tennessean.com/article/20111109/OPINION03/311090073/-No-Child-faces-big-changes ), the West Virginia Charleston Gazette ( http://e2ma.net/go/7633029661/207373530/227074925/1365043/goto:http://wvgazette.com/Opinion/OpEdCommentaries/201111040125 ) and The Huffington Post ( http://e2ma.net/go/7633029661/207373530/227074926/1365043/goto:http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mark-kennedy-shriver/no-child-left-behind-in-b_b_1011419.html ). We also engaged in a debate on the best ways to serve rural schools in Education Week ( http://e2ma.net/go/7633029661/207373530/227074927/1365043/goto:http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/rural_education/2011/10/rural_schools_left_behind_in_proposed_legislation.html ). Last month, we also released the latest results from our early childhood program: despite significant risk factors, 84 percent of preschoolers scored average or above on a key vocabulary test. These are exciting results and we were honored that Head Start turned to us to help support their work. This month, we began running three Head Start centers in rural Arkansas, serving more than 100 children. I cant think of a more credible testimony to our program efficacy than this important partnership. Finally, Id like to share some amazing words from a friend. I recently joined a team from T.J. Maxx, one of U.S. Programs longest-standing corporate partners, on a visit to Bolivar County, Mississippi. Mike Manoogian, Senior Vice President and Director of Stores, was part of that group and had this to report when he returned: I had never visited a Save the Children site before. The extent of poverty was alarming; I never would have expected to see what I saw in America. In the elementary school that we visited, almost all the children were living below the poverty level. As the Save the Children team said and demonstrated, the solution is found in three places: education, education, education. If we help the kids that are struggling the most, thats going to be their ticket out of poverty, and I was blown away by what I saw in action. We are proud to partner with Mike and all the folks at T.J. Maxx. They have been generous supporters for more than 25 years! Thats all for now. As always, if you have any questions or suggestions, please dont hesitate to call or email.
