So many challenging issues face our country today - growing poverty rates, increased
homelessness, and profound ecological crises - just to name a few. Throughout the
Northwest, many committed Jesuit Volunteers are facing these challenges by providing
life-giving, direct service to thousands of vulnerable men, women, and children
most affected by these endemic problems.

Several JVs, however, are confronting our nation's challenges in a different, yet
vitally important way - they are serving as advocates, raising their voices to promote
the fundamental, structural changes needed to make these issues a thing of the past.

Naivasha Dean is a Jesuit Volunteer currently serving in Portland, Oregon. She serves
at Partnership for Safety and Justice (PSJ), an agency which brings together those
people most directly affected by crime to advocate for a system that is just and
that more effectively builds safer, healthier communities. Below, Naivaisha shares
what serving as an advocate has meant to her:

I chose an advocacy position because I wanted to have an insight into how public
policy gets made and how to make structural change. My eyes have been opened to
injustices in the system that I didn't know existed, and I feel that I am slowly
learning the tools to actually address them constructively. Advocacy allows me to
try to influence these issues democratically through the social systems and institutions
that are in place.

. . . I enjoy being more educated about these issues that directly affect our public
safety and our budget crisis, and being equipped with the language to enlighten
others about them. . . . it is great to feel that I am contributing to making changes
that will help untold numbers of people. I might never meet them, but I will know
that I have made life easier and safer for them.

Naivasha will send this project made by PSJ community members
to legislators to advocate for more funds for

community-based addiction treatment programs.
