We were honored to have both Howard W. Buffett, ex=cutive director of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and Kip Tom, presiden= and CEO of Tom Farms and member of the Farm Journal Foundation’s Bo=rd of Directors, speak at the breakfast. Kip opened up the program by disc=ssing <em>Farmers Feeding the World’s</em> goals:</p><p>1) To fight =unger at home and abroad by providing assistance to partner organizations =n the front lines of sustainable agricultural development and immediate hu=ger assistance.</p><p>2) To educate consumers about the important role far=ers play in feeding a hungry world, and the reasons he became involved wit= the Foundation.</p><p>Following this introduction, Howard and Kip shared =heir experiences from their March trip to Afghanistan as part of a Departm=nt of Defense Task Force for Business and Stability Operations (TFBSO) del=gation that included Andy Weber, chairman of Farm Journal Foundation; Howa=d G. Buffett, president of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation; and a profess=onal film crew. While in Afghanistan, the delegation witnessed important a=ricultural development work being done by the Howard G. Buffett Foundation= the U.N. World Food Program and the Norman Borlaug Institute, and saw its=impact on the daily lives of the Afghan people. In his remarks, Howard tou=hed on some of the TFBSO’s success stories in the war-torn country a=d the lessons that he took away from his time there. </p><p>Howard a=d Kip concluded their talk with a preview of the Farm Journal Foundation f=lm crew’s coverage of the trip, which shines a light on a side of Af=hanistan most of us don’t see on the evening news.
