Tuesday - October 11, 2011 From the School Query This week’s query: How can I learn from others? Middle School queries for the week are written by the students in the 7th grade Quakerism and the Arts class. They are part of the daily bulletin and are read at Meeting for Worship each week. Student queries begin this week! Notes from Sally This week’s assembly: Speakers from our partner organizations for the Fannie Mae Miniwalk for the Homeless. Students will be bringing home the registration forms; we hope that you will contribute to this effort! Our Miniwalk will be held on October 28th. The SFS Middle School Debate Team is a member of the DC Urban Debate League, which sponsors five Middle School debate tournaments throughout the academic year. The first tournament will be this Saturday, October 15, 2011 and will be hosted by and take place at the Sidwell Friends Upper School from 9 a.m. until around 4 p.m. Everyone gathers in the cafeteria starting at 9 a.m. and debates usually begin around 10:15 a.m. in the various classrooms throughout the Upper School. There are 12-15 teams from the greater Washington area, including teams from other independent schools, public schools and public charter schools. Parents and friends of Sidwell Friends Middle School debaters are encouraged to attend. Parent Conference Days are Tuesday and Wednesday, October 25 and 26. Please note that Middle School dismisses at 11:45 on Tuesday and is closed on Wednesday. If you did not sign up for a conference on Back-to-School Night, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher or advisor for a time. Please note the following about Tuesday, October 25th, which is the half day: Lunch will be served to all students before school is dismissed at 11:45. The Aftercare Program will be open, beginning at 12 noon. The shuttle to the Edgemoor Campus will NOT run until the normal Tuesday time of approximately 2:30. These options exist for students who normally ride the shuttle: Parents may pick students up at Middle School at 11:45. (Please note that Lower School dismisses at 12:15.) 7/8 students who are staying for their hangouts may ride the shuttle at 2:30. Students may drop in to Aftercare. Please contact auxiliary programs at summer@sidwell.edu to drop in (regular after care participants do not need to RSVP) The drop in charge is $10 (12:00-2:30 or $20 until 6 pm). Please complete a drop in form if you do not already have one on file (form found on MS web page). Don’t forget the upcoming CHI meetings: 7th grade tomorrow night, 6th grade on October 17th, and 8th grade on October 19th. 8th graders will be working on the day of Homecoming, October 22nd, to raise money for their class gift to a charity of their choice. Students have been signing up here at school, both to bring goods to sell and to work at the sale. For questions, contact the 8th grade reps. Are you careful not to disturb the spirit of the meeting by late arrival or in other ways?” (Baltimore Yearly Meeting Faith and Practice) Quote: “The Quaker meeting for worship is not a place for individual meditation, it is a community in which two or three are gathered together to wait upon the presence in the midst which links us all.” (Edward Hoare, Deepening the Spiritual Life of the Meeting, FGC, 1995) “Quaker Quotes” is a weekly submission by Melissa Belman (melissa@ecologicflooring.com), Holly Moore (htmoore@gmail.com) and Cindy Terrell (ctcabin@gmail.com.
