Wednesday - October 12, 2011 From the School Message From Lee Dear Friends, Everyone enjoyed the delicious goodies that were provided for the Faculty/Staff Appreciation Breakfast last Friday. Many thanks to all who contributed to this special event and for all of the important work that the PA does every day to support our school community. On Wednesday, students had the opportunity to be part of a presentation by Iona Rozeal Brown, this year’s Rubenstein Visiting Artist. Ms. Brown also visited visual art classes to discuss her artistic process with students. The exhibition will run October 4- November 4 in the Rubenstein Gallery. Please visit http://www.ionarozealbrown.com/about/ for more information about Ms. Brown. Last week was our first ever “Love Week” sponsored by GLSBT, our Upper School club focused on gay, lesbian, straight, bisexual and transgender issues. The purpose of this event was to promote awareness and to provide information about these issues from multiple points of view. All events were at lunch and were designed to be open to all students, faculty, and staff. Below was the schedule for the week: Monday: Sidwell Faculty/Staff panel discussion and Q & A about being out in a work setting and their own experiences in high school Tuesday: A student-led discussion on the straight ally movement and the social aspect of activism Wednesday: Chloe Schwenke, distinguished Quaker author and professor, talking about her experience with her own male-to-female transition and the issues surrounding transgendered citizens Thursday: A student-led discussion of bisexuality and the process of questioning Friday: Candace Gingrich-Jones, nationally known lesbian activist (and half-sister of former Speaker of the House and current candidate for President Newt Gingrich) discussing her work with the Human Rights Campaign Peace, Lee PA Announcements 9th Grade Potlucks 9th Grade Parents, please send your first and second choice for attending a Potluck Dinner to jenifer@magliato.com. The dates to choose from are: Nov 5, Nov 11, Nov 12, Nov 18, Dec 2, Dec 3. If you can host a small group of parents at your house, please let us know what night you would like to do so. Thanks! Other News US Community Service Club Food Bank at Garrison Elementary School: Wednesday, October 19th, 4 pm - 6 pm Parent volunteers are invited to join US students in packing donated food items for collection by those in need living in the vicinity of Garrison ES, located at 1200 S. St. NW, DC (nearest metro station - U Street). This community service project, organized by the US Community Actions Club in partnership with Martha's Table, is a concrete way for our school community to address the problems of hunger and lack of access to healthy food in the D.C. community. If you would like to volunteer for this worthwhile service project, please contact David Connell connelld@sidwell.edu . Please note that younger students or siblings of US students are welcome to participate in this service project if they are accompanied by an adult. October Food Drive to Benefit Martha's Table The US Community Actions Club is sponsoring a Food Drive this month to benefit Martha's Table. Requested as urgently needed food items are: - Proteins: Nuts (Almonds, Peanuts, Pistachios, etc.) - Grains: Cereal, Microwaveable Popcorn (Low sodium) All donations may be dropped-off at David Connell's office. If you would like to make a food item donation directly to Martha's Table, you may do so by visiting their amazon.com Meal for Minds wishlist: Food& Nutrition. Next to New Sale We need YOUR help! The donations have been collected and sorted and now it’s time for the pricing to begin! We are in desperate need of volunteers to help this week and next week to price each item. We will be pricing in the Wannan Gym at the Upper School from 8 am to 4 pm from today until Wednesday, October 19th. Please encourage your friends and other parents to come. Any time you can give would be greatly appreciated. To sign up to volunteer and for any questions, please contact the Events for Student Scholarships office at events@sidwell.edu or 202-537-8110. As always, volunteers are welcome to drop-in as their schedules allow. Annual 9th Grade Thanksgiving Pie Bake WHO: All class of 2015 and their family members (including younger siblings and siblings from other schools) WHAT: The Annual 9th Grade Pie Bake. We will bake 200-250 pies to send to 4 food shelters in the area. (ThriveDC, Rosemount Center, Central Union Mission, and Martha's Table). You get to taste the pies too, plain or a la mode! WHEN: Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, 12pm to 2pm WHERE: Upper School Cafeteria, 3825 Wisconsin Ave., NW, Washington, DC WHY: It is a school tradition for the 9th grade to use the Thanksgiving Pie Bake to support the vulnerable and disadvantaged people in our community that these agencies serve, particularly in this time of economic distress in our area. We believe the act of hand making pies together as a family for someone else is a strong reminder of why we are thankful at this time of year in many ways. Science has shown that scent is a powerful trigger of memory later in life. Years from now, your student will remember this great Sidwell tradition when smelling warm, holiday pies baking in the oven. And, they will remember their investment of time for others. It is a great opportunity to meet other Sidwell Friends families. Read MoreVolunteer to Assist the Variety Show Come join us as we prepare for The 10th Annual Variety Show! If you are a fan of the performing arts and would like to be involved in putting on an excellent production, please join us! The committee tasks are well-defined and the date of the event is January 28. Love, trust, fellowship, selflessness are all mediated to us through our interdependence. Just as we could not live physically without each other, we cannot live spiritually in isolation. We are individually free but also communally bound. We cannot act without affecting others and others cannot act without affecting us. We know ourselves as we are reflected in the faces, action and attitudes of each other.” (Janet Scott, 1980, Germantown Friends Meeting) On Meeting for Worship Query: “Do you come to meeting with heart and mind prepared? Are you careful not to disturb the spirit of the meeting by late arrival or in other ways?” (Baltimore Yearly Meeting Faith and Practice) Quote: “The Quaker meeting for worship is not a place for individual meditation, it is a community in which two or three are gathered together to wait upon the presence in the midst which links us all.” (Edward Hoare, Deepening the Spiritual Life of the Meeting, FGC, 1995) “Quaker Quotes” is a weekly submission by Melissa Belman, Holly Moore and Cindy Terrell. We welcome ideas. US Wednesday Newsletter Information How to Submit an Article to the Wednesday Letter. Send submissions to PA.USNewsletter@sidwell.edu by 2 pm Tuesday.
