March has been a busy month. C_TEC hosted our Advisory Board meeting in Austin, Texas at the beginning of the annual SXSW conference. This full day meeting allowed us to tackle topics from the development of startup communities across the U.S., to the skills gap challenge, and how to address the tech lash that the tech community is now facing. These issues were also discussed in the SXSW panel, "Making Government Better with Better Technology," which included Representative Jimmy Gomez (D-CA), Senator Jerry Moran (R-KS), United Technologies Corporation's Cindy Jimenez-Turner, and C_TEC's very own Julie Stitzel.

Emerging technology has the capability to improve lives and make business and government more efficient. It's crucial that policymakers strike the right balance to not stifle the innovation that is taking place every day. I came away from our Advisory Board meeting invigorated by the conversation with out members regarding the important role of C_TEC. I look forward to continuing to work with many of you to accomplish our objectives and continue to support the business community.

From March 8th to March 9th, C_TEC hosted its Advisory Board meeting at SXSW in Austin.

On March 9th, C_TEC submitted comments (https://t.e2ma.net/click/buqmjd/r2f0ql/js2knq) to the Department of Transportation following the Autonomous Vehicle Policy Summit.

On March 10th, Julie Stitzel participated in two panels at SXSW: Supporting Women in the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem through Public Policy and Making Government Better with Better Technology with Senator Jerry Moran (R-KS).

On March 10th, Jordan Crenshaw competed in the 'Are You Smarter than a Mathlete' competition at SXSW.

On March 14th, C_TEC held its New Economy Working Group call. Topics on the call included follow up from the February 22nd kick off event with Secretary Acosta, AHP comment submissions, recent congressional retirement round table, and an update on current and pending litigation impacting new economy companies.

On March 16th, C_TEC sent a letter (https://t.e2ma.net/click/buqmjd/r2f0ql/by5knq) to Senator Cortez Masto (D-NV) and Senator Burr (R-NC) applauding their introduction of S. 1809, the Moving and Fostering Innovation to Revolutionize Smarter Transportation Act.

On March 16th, the Chamber sent a letter (https://t.e2ma.net/click/buqmjd/r2f0ql/rq6knq) to Senator Kennedy (R-LA) applauding his efforts to restore regulatory certainty to the Internet ecosystem by introducing S.2510, the Open Internet Preservation Act.

What do you think makes your company unique?

DAQRI has developed a comprehensive set of products that delivers professional-grade augmented reality at scale in the enterprise setting. This includes building hardware and software with developer-friendly tools that leverages a robust ecosystem of partners to help provide real world solutions that empower workers and improve how businesses operate. DAQRI Smart Glasses powered with the DAQRI Worksense suite of products deliver a complete augmented reality solution kit that enhances the experience of employees and is currently being deployed in training, inspection, advanced manufacturing, quality assurance, and a multitude of other enterprise applications. Much has been made about the potential of Augmented Reality and how it might be applied in the future. The thing that makes DAQRI unique is that our products are delivering solutions across multiple industries and use cases today. We have seen significant improvements in quality, safety, training times, compliance and worker satisfaction across multiple industries and use cases and the DAQRI products driving these improvements are advancing and improving with each new hardware and software release.

What policy goals are a priority for your company for 2018?

DAQRI is focused on policy initiatives that support business growth and investment in using technology as a means of empowering and training workers to grow the economy. We believe that technology plays a critical role in helping train and develop the workforce of the future that will power the economic growth engine across the US and ultimately the world. DAQRI has been working with the Chamber of Commerce and Congress to help identify the skills required to excel in the workforce of the future and the role technology will play in driving that. We believe that technology is key to helping to support knowledge transfer, skill development, worker training, and the overall investment in workers to meet the needs of the economy today and into the future.

Why did you join the Chamber?

We joined the Chamber because we share the vision that technology plays a critical role in supporting the workforce and broader economic growth across the country. The Chamber has been a great partner to DAQRI as we have evolved from a startup to a company now deploying our products globally at scale. We have experienced the benefits of the Chamber’s long track record or supporting businesses of all sizes as they grow their operations and have leveraged their expertise and network throughout that process. In addition, the work that the C_TEC ​New ​Economy ​Working ​Group is focused on is very much aligned to DAQRI’s mission of using technology as a means to empower workers and help businesses operate at their highest potential.

What role does DAQRI see itself playing in the New Economy?

We are currently at a tipping point in terms of the mass adoption of augmented reality and the potential that it has for people and companies across the world. The only way to unlock the potential that new technologies offer the economy is to bring together industry, policymakers, and technologists to have a robust discussion about what is possible and the best path forward. We see ourselves playing a positive role in this discussion and will demonstrate real world applications of this as our products continue to deliver improved results with our customers. Our goal is to partner with the Chamber to show how new technologies positively impact how workers do their job, demonstrate how data and the improved use of technology can be leveraged to improve individual company business outcomes, and ultimately how this fuels macro economic growth. Today, DAQRI technologies allow you to overlay information into the real world and execute rapid knowledge transfer that empowers workers to have access to information that would not be possible without the use of our products. This information gives individuals the information necessary to make better decisions, operate more safely, and ultimately deliver better business outcomes in their jobs. Our devices are having an impact in the workplace now, and that impact will accelerate as the technology continues to develop across an even broader spectrum of applications in the future.

How is your company making a positive impact on the community?

Having a positive impact in our local community is very important to DAQRI. A few examples of this include our partnership with Junior Achievement of Southern California to support local teachers and students through their Student Entrepreneurship Challenge and Job Shadow Program. We have also partnered with the City of Los Angeles' Information Technology Agency (ITA) to complete a landmark use of augmented reality in the maintenance and repair of emergency response headsets. Ted Ross, CIO, City of Los Angeles said, “There are more than 1,500 Firefighter headsets in use, costing us about $350 each. This technology can literally save the City tens of thousands of dollars every year.” We plan to continue to seek out opportunities to use technology as a means of showing what is possible in the communities we operate in as well as in the educational setting. Augmented reality is going to be a large part of the future of all communities and we want to help use the technology we have developed today to help support community growth, workforce development, and accelerating STEM programs across the United States.

What is one thing that the general public does not understand about Augmented Reality that it should?

Most of the discussion about augmented reality has been focused on future applications and the incredible potential this technology will deliver in years to come across all aspects of our lives. While the discussion around what is possible in the future is very exciting, what receives less attention is that augmented reality is delivering results today. Currently, DAQRI’s augmented reality products are being used to improve business outcomes across manufacturing, field services, maintenance, quality assurance inspections, construction, and many other use cases in companies all over the world. These companies and their employees are seeing incredible results as they are deploying practical and valuable augmented reality solutions that are improving productivity, making workers safer, reducing training times, and laying the infrastructure for rapid growth in the future. We do not have to wait years to use augmented reality as there are positive use cases available today that will only grow into the future.
