Dear Members of the Board,

I am very pleased to share with you the latest of our updates on what’s happening on food security issues relevant to WFP and WFP USA. I would like to highlight a hearing of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (Subcommittee on Multilateral International Development, Multilateral Institutions, and International Economic, Energy, and Environmental Policy) which took place yesterday on the topic of Why Food Security Matters. WFP Executive Director David Beasley was in town and shared his views with the Subcommittee on the relationship between global food security and global stability. We were delighted that our own Chase Sova had been invited to be on a separate panel to present the academic case for this connection, drawing on the Winning the Peace report which he authored and WFP USA released at the end of 2017. Among the other issues covered are updates on the desperate humanitarian situations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Syria (the latter having this week marked the 7th anniversary of conflict); examples of innovations introduced by WFP; and private sector collaboration on homegrown hunger solutions (Cargill featured). You will also see that WFP and the World Bank have just announced a joint strategic partnership that will combine the Bank’s analytic and financial expertise with WFP’s operational presence to tackle some of the most challenging areas which cut across the humanitarian/development divide (such as social protection and the prevention of childhood stunting). The focus will be primarily in fragile and conflict/violence-affected contexts.
