“Why should we focus on hiring women?”

That’s a question I’ve had to answer far too many times at work, where I advise companies in male-dominated industries -- like media, sports, and technology -- to hire talented women into executive positions.

Sometimes when I answer, I point to the sheer impact of women I know and admire -- like Cathy Lanier, now Senior Vice President of Security for the NFL, who was the first woman to serve as Chief of Police for Washington D.C. and is widely credited for transforming the city’s safety and security. Or Jaymee Messler, who conceived and founded the ground-breaking digital media site The Players’ Tribune, giving direct voice to athletes and their compelling, often life-changing stories.

Other times, I simply note the economic importance of representation -- I remind companies that women make up more than half of consumers, and that their perspective is needed to be successful.

But most of all, I regret the fact that I have to give specific reasons to hire women in the first place. Hiring women (and paying them equally) shouldn’t require special effort -- it should be normal. It should be obvious.

Because I’ll keep answering that question -- “why should we focus on hiring women?” -- but if we work together and press for progress, then we can finally move towards a society where it’s no longer asked.
