Hunter, I’ve been teaching for ten years, so I have seen many changes to our educational system. But the most disturbing, by far, is the fact that now I have to teach my students, and myself, how to react to an active shooter situation. I teach my fifteen and sixteen year olds about George Washington, Sojourner Truth and “run, hide, or fight.” I look around my classroom and contemplate where I could possibly hide my 28 students if the unimaginable happened. Choosing between laying down my life for my students – individuals that I refer to as “my kids” – or going home to my daughters is not a choice I ever imagined having to face when I decided to become a teacher. The truth is that an active shooter situation is my number one nightmare. Many people, teachers, parents, politicians, have come up with ideas for how to stop these school shootings. The most absurd one is that teachers should be armed. As a high school history teacher I have about 125 kids rotate through my classroom during the day. Each child is different and needs different things. What none of them need is a gun in my desk. Help us make school shootings a thing of the past and help schools become, once again, safe places for teachers and for students. Please join my brother Seth and me in opposing weapons within our classrooms. https://secure.ngpvan.com/99MIt_sBA062mYg21fP7QA2 Our classrooms are for learning. They are not a place for dangerous weapons. Teachers don’t need guns, they need the resources they ask for at the beginning of every school year. We need supplies so that the students who cannot afford to buy pencils don’t have to beg for them from their classmates, thus humiliating themselves. We need smaller class sizes so that we can get to know each student on a more personal level, which would help students feel like they have an adult they can turn to instead of feeling like just a face in the crowd. We need more guidance counselors and adjustment counselors to help the kids who are crying for help but can’t get anyone to listen because their current counselors cannot possibly hear the hundreds of voices crying out for them. We need more school resource officers so that each school has someone in the building at all times to handle the issues that arise and that teachers cannot be expected to deal with. What we don’t need is for me to have a gun in the building. Join Seth and me and stand against guns in schools right now. https://secure.ngpvan.com/99MIt_sBA062mYg21fP7QA2 Thank you, Eliza Moulton Crimmings PAID FOR BY SETH MOULTON FOR CONGRESS.
