“Careers in Global Development” is a monthly series featuring U.S. senior-level, multilateral and NGO officials who have worked in the field of development for at least twenty years. The series is aimed at young professionals who are interested in working in development and will include a one-hour dialogue on both the specific expertise of the speaker, as well as the career path and influences along the way. It will focus on specific areas of interest, including the role of humanitarian assistance in development and U.S. foreign policy; development as a tool to counter violent extremism; and sectoral issues such as food security, health, and education.


This session features James Fleming, who serves as USAID's Division Chief for Disaster Response in Asia, Latin America, and Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia (ALE) at the Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), the federal office responsible for coordinating the U.S. Government's response to international disasters. Mr. Fleming guides the response program and contingency planning for disaster responses, as well as regional and country-specific disaster risk reduction initiatives. With a mandate to save lives, alleviate suffering and reduce social and economic impact of disasters, OFDA monitors, mitigates and responds to global hazards and humanitarian needs as they arise. In fiscal year 2015, OFDA responded to 49 disasters in 45 countries and provided approximately $1.9 billion in humanitarian assistance.
