With all the recent news about youth activism regarding school shootings and gun control, I wanted to introduce you to a local youth nonprofit that has been working to empower and uplift young social change makers right here in Washington, DC. Modeled after the successful civic engagement programming developed for youth in Chicago, Mikva Challenge DC <https://www.mikvachallenge.org/dc/> develops youth to be empowered, informed, and active citizens who will promote a just and equitable society. Mikva Challenge DC was founded on the premise that youth voice and participation matter, and that our civic and political life will be stronger when youth participate and help shape their own destinies.

Recently, our Mikva DC students have been interviewed and featured on numerous news outlets for their work to bring awareness about the ways gun violence affects young people in urban areas on a regular basis and without national attention.

Columnist Petula Dvorak from the Washington Post interviewed some of our Mikva DC students at Thurgood Marshall Academy, as well as our Executive Director Robyn Lingo, for this great piece entitled "The nation is focused on students and gun violence. Two days before the March for our Lives, over 70 Mikva DC students presented their civic action projects on a range of topics including gun violence, school attendance issues, bullying, gentrification and DC statehood, at our Action Civics Fair. On April 18th, we are holding our annual Spring Benefit<https://www.mikvachallenge.org/2018-mikva-challenge-dc-spring-benefit/> to support the important youth civic engagement work that Mikva DC is doing. Even though the March for our Lives has passed, Mikva DC has been, and continue to, train local students be civic leaders on any issue of their choosing. Our job is to support youth voice and youth leadership and create platforms for them to have a bigger audience. We hope you will join us!
