Tuesday, April 05, 2016 A Message from Head of School Bryan GarmanDear Friends,As most of you know, the School scheduled women’s soccer star Abby Wambach to appear at the spring fundraiser A Night for Scholars and, separately, to speak to students later this week. Early Sunday morning, Abby was arrested for driving under the influence.Abby’s extraordinary accomplishments on the field and her response to her lapse in judgment merit our respect. But as we all know—and as the Centers for Disease Control has demonstrated—driving under the influence is a serious matter that, along with underage drinking, is of special concern to parents and educators. As we prepare to celebrate the accomplishments of our students with Commencement and other end-of-year activities, we are reminded of the dangers of alcohol and drugs and their ongoing presence in the lives of teenagers. In the coming weeks, I suspect that Abby will carry herself with her typical integrity. I wish her well as she moves forward and hope that one day she will be able to visit to Sidwell Friends. She has expressed interest in doing so. But given the nature and timing of the infraction, Abby and the School have agreed that it is best that she not attend A Night for Scholars. The student Collection scheduled for Saturday afternoon has been canceled, but we hope you will join us for A Night for Scholars. We cannot let a disappointing incident dampen our enthusiasm for the occasion, which is crucial to broadening access to Sidwell Friends. For more than 300 years, Quaker schools have provided financial assistance to students who could not otherwise afford an education. This tradition is essential to the mission to our School, where one in four students receives a financial aid award averaging more than $27,000 annually. In addition, the generosity of donors enables the School to offer book grants, underwrite travel opportunities, and provide academic and counseling support as necessary. To maintain funding at current levels, we need to rally to assure that we reach the annual goal of raising more than $500,000 at the event. Financial aid benefits all of our students, enriching experience and perspective and ensuring excellence in all areas of School life. So let’s rise to the occasion to affirm our values and strengthen our community.I look forward to seeing you Saturday night, to paying a special tribute to our faculty and staff, and to demonstrating our shared support for what matters most—our students. In friendship,BryanA 45-year tradition of philanthropy in support of student financial aid.Saturday, April 9, 20166:30-10:30 p.m.Sidwell Friends Athletic Center3825 Wisconsin Avenue NWWashington, DC 20016$150 per ticketTicket sponsorship opportunities available. All net proceeds benefit student financial aid.
