Preparing for Egypt's Presidential Elections

Monday, March 26: A panel will explore the political and legal
implications of Egypt’s recent parliamentary elections and forthcoming
presidential elections. The discussion will bring together experts to
analyze post-revolution legal reforms and election laws, specifically
asking how these laws have affected minority groups and parties, and

Joint Conference on James J. Angleton

Studies and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars are
sponsoring a joint conference on longtime CIA counterintelligence chief
James J. Angleton. The goal of this conference, generously sponsored
by the George T. Kalaris Intelligence Studies Fund, is to foster
informed, scholarly discussion of James Angleton and his time at the
CIA, as well as his continuing influence on American
counterintelligence. The conference will bring together a wide variety
of experts on intelligence history with a view towards examining

Current Change in Cuba: From Chaos to Market Socialism

Thursday, March 29: Speaker Domingo Amuchastegui has worked at the
Cuban Foreign Ministry and in the Tricontinental Organization and also
served a a professor in the Diplomatic Academy and National Defense
College in Havana. He has written extensively on Cuban politics and

Getting Real: Piloting and Financing the Health Impact Fund

Thursday, March 29: The Health Impact Fund (HIF) is a proposed
pay-for-performance mechanism that would offer innovators the option to
register any new medicine, thereby undertaking to make it available
worldwide for ten years at no more than the lowest feasible cost of
production and distribution. During this decade, the registrant would
be compensated from fixed annual reward pools divided among registered
products according to their health impact. Is the idea realistic? This
lecture discusses the latest thinking on how reliable long-term funding

The Palestinian Kufiya: Solidarity and/vs. Fashion

called the "kufiya craze," the moment (roughly 2004-2009) when the
Palestinian kufiya was embraced by Western celebrities, fashion
designers and hipsters, and the debates and controversies that ensued,
including claims that it represented terrorist sympathies or that it
represented the commodification and degradation of an important
