How can a crisis-ridden Europe return to stability? View op-ed contributor
Harold James thinks Otto von Bismarck should ride to the rescue. "A familiar
specter is haunting Europe: How to live with a powerful Germany that seems
to act according to its own interests, and whose policies are driven by
domestic politics," writes James. "Headlines across Europe are stoking old
fantasies and fears. Yet, this time, the appropriate answer to that question
is surprising, even shocking. The best way to deal with a resurgent Germany
is for its partners and neighbors to imitate the institutional features,
including monetary and fiscal stability, that have made that country so
successful and powerful."[2] Link.
It's been a year since Japan was pounded by a tsunami and the Fukushima
nuclear plant threatened to reanimate Godzilla. But View columnist Willie
Pesek doesn't consider it an anniversary. "Anniversaries commemorate events
in the past, ones for which there is a modicum of closure," he writes.
"Radiation is still venting into the air around Fukushima. Makeshift
equipment, some held in place by tape, is keeping vital reactor systems
operating. Is Japan’s 3/11 history? Not unless we change the
definition. What the first anniversary of the disaster requires is a dose of
accountability. We need a few good perp walks by current and past Tokyo
Electric Power Co. executives, whose arrogance, negligence and corruption
sent radiation clouds Tokyo’s way. Next on the docket should be the
government officials who enabled what more closely resembles an organized
crime syndicate than an energy sector." [3]Link.

Columnist Margaret Carlson thinks the G.O.P. is going to be hit by its own
tsunami -- outraged women voters: "Blame Rush Limbaugh if you want -- and I
will, later, at the risk of being 'Fluked' -- for the uproar over
contraception. But the real culprit is the leadership of the Republican
Party, which snatched defeat (the Blunt amendment, which would have let any
boss decide what insurance coverage suits his conscience) from the jaws of
victory (the president’s compromise with Catholic bishops over such
coverage). You have to wonder if the party that has been obsessed with lady
parts for the better part of a month can bring enough women and independents
home in November to beat President Barack Obama." [4]Link.

Attorney General Eric Holder got mostly pans for his much-hyped terrorism
speech on Monday, but the View editors looked a little deeper and found a
few things worth remarking on. "It was notable -- and promising -- that
Holder, who has long championed the use of civilian courts to try terrorism
suspects, adamantly defended the military commission system in place at
Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as a complement to criminal trials," they write. "The
much-derided military system has been gradually refined over the last
decade, Holder noted, making it a legitimate forum for justice in the age of
terrorism." Link.
