Dear Hunter,

One of the most important reasons I first ran for Attorney General was to protect those who cannot protect themselves -- especially children.

In our schools today, there are too many students who are the victims of bullying and whose voices are not heard. One in every three middle and high school students reports being bullied, but those are only the cases we know about. That's why, a few days ago, I was proud to stand with a coalition fighting for legislation that will give us the knowledge we need to combat bullying and give kids and parents the information they need to get help from my office.

Unfortunately, bullying is only one of the dangers our children face. When you first elected me to this job, I promised that I would wake up every day thinking of how to best fight child abuse, and I want to let you know about a remarkable program that's making a real difference.

Children are not responsible for protecting themselves from abuse -- that is our job as adults. I have partnered with the Darkness to Light Foundation, the YMCA, and Prevent Child Abuse Delaware to bring the Stewards of Children training program to Delaware. This training empowers adults to recognize when a child is in danger, step in, and change a life for the better.

We set a goal of training 35,000 Delawareans over five years to recognize the signs of abuse and report it to law enforcement. I think we will exceed that goal. To help us do that, I am working with the General Assembly to secure funding to help cover the cost of the training sessions.
