Monday, March 11: Every year in Pakistan, many people – the majority of them women – are known to be victimized by brutal acid attacks, while numerous other cases go unreported. Many reported assailants, often a husband or someone else known by the victim, receive minimal if any punishment. Recently honored with a Best Documentary Short Oscar®, Saving Face chronicles the lives of acid-attack survivors Zakia and Rukhsana as they attempt to bring their assailants to justice and move on with their lives. Wednesday, March 13: The Arab Spring presents a mixed blessing for the Justice and Development Party's (AKP) regional vision, which is sometimes referred to as a neo-Ottoman view of the world. The dizzying pace of events is rapidly changing the balance of power in the Middle East and causing problems for Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu's 'zero-problems with neighbors' policy, particularly as far as relations with Syria are concerned. In addition to problems with Syria, in the long run, the re-emergence of Egypt as a regional leader could also potentially complicate Turkey's regional assessments. ** Is the Military Use of Drones Ethically Defensible?

Wednesday, March 13: Drones are one of the most controversial weapons currently employed by the U.S. military. Despite their precise targeting capabilities, they have been heavily criticized for enabling civilian casualties, and their legality has been questioned both domestically and abroad. Michael Walzer, an expert on just war theory and the ethical use of force, will discuss the history of targeted killings and assassinations, including the moral arguments for and against these actions. He will focus on how the invention of the drone changes these moral arguments and will raise critiques of a qualified defense of using drones—putting forward an invitation to worry. Wednesday, March 13: David Galbraith will discuss how the calls for change sweeping through the Arab world have affected internal dynamics in the Gulf Cooperation Council states. Although only one state - Bahrain - experienced mass protests calling for a new political order, most others were impacted in different but meaningful ways. Mr. Galbraith will address how the United States should approach the question of reform in the Gulf states. The talk will draw on a paper that will be published in the upcoming edition of the Georgetown Journal of International Affairs, a draft of which is available. Aelred of Reivaulx believed that it is most especially through friendship, rather than solitude, that we abide in God and God in us. But friendship is no longer a subject people talk about. What is spiritual friendship? Ultimately, how can the office of friendship bring one closer to God? Amy Andrews will draw on her recent memoir Love & Salt: A Spiritual Friendship Shared in Letters, co-written with Jessica Mesman Griffith, and on the twelfth century classic Spiritual Friendship by Aelred of Rivaulx to probe these questions and bring alive the rich tradition and potential of spiritual friendship in our time. ** First Chernobyl, Now Fukushima: Differences and Similarities
------------------------------------------------------------
Friday, March 15: Featuring Timothy Mousseau of the University of South Carolina. It seems possible that many of the effects that have been observed in Chernobyl but not yet seen in Fukushima are the product of multiple generations of exposure and consequent mutation-accumulation rather than the effects of acute exposure, although a recent study of birds and insects has found significant declines in some groups. An intensive research program should be initiated to compare and contrast the effects of mutagens stemming from the Chernobyl and Fukushima disasters in natural populations so that accurate predictions may be generated related to the long term consequences of radiological events and the likely risks to human populations in these regions. Friday, March 15: Featuring 2012-2013 Levant Post-Doctoral Fellow Raja Abillama. What could one say about secularism with respect to a society that considers itself to be antithetical to it, yet its individual members can -- and occasionally do -- openly claim to be secular? Rather than proceed to prove that the state is secular (or not), Dr. Abillama reflects on the anxieties, desires and aversions embedded in a series of dispersed ethnographic situations and encounters. He brings to the surface assumptions -- about identity, language, religion, translation, sectarianism, law, marriage, ethics, medicine -- constitutive of the manifold unarticulated and embodied senses of the secular that make possible both the affirmation and negation of secularism.
