Religious Freedom & Extremism: Lessons from the Arab Spring

between religious freedom and religious extremism, defined as religious
political engagement hostile to constitutional democracy and open to
the use of violence? Can religious freedom limit religious extremism?

Muslim Chaplaincy Hadith and Sunnah Seminar

Sunday, March 18: 'Faith & Justice' and 'Contemplation in Action' are

learn about how the Prophet Muhammad translated his faith into action
through his sayings and practices, Hadith and Sunnah. This Islamic

Minority Rights in China: A Spotlight on the Uyghur People

Monday, March 19: Prominent Uyghur human rights activist Rebiya Kadeer
will share her story of political activism and the continued fight to
expose the repression of her people. An introduction to the issue of

Time to Attack Iran?

Monday, March 19: In the January/February 2012 issue of Foreign
Affairs, Dr. Matthew Kroenig laid out his argument for an armed strike
in an article entitled "Time to Attack Iran." Dr. Colin Kahl offered a
response in the March/April 2012 Foreign Affairs, under the title "Not
Time to Attack Iran." The two authors will debate their respective
propositions and address new developments that have taken place since

Entre El Barrio y El Mundo with author Nicolás Albertoni

Tuesday, March 20: “Entre el barrio y el mundo”, by the young
researcher Nicolás Albertoni Gómez, explores different paths for
Uruguay amidst the public debate about whether Mercosur is the best
course for its insertion in the international arena. One alternative is
the Chilean model. Albertoni explores it in depth and manages to
unravel any myths and doubts surrounding economic processes in both
countries with rigor and clarity. With forewords by former presidents
Julio Maria Sanguinetti of Uruguay and Eduardo Frei-Ruiz Tagle of
Chile, this book is based on an investigation of nearly two years.

International Negotiations In Central Asia: Interaction Game

Tuesday, March 20: This is an interactive workshop where participants
will have an opportunity to discuss and experience the peculiarities of
interstate interactions and negotiations in Central Asia through a
simulation game. The participants will examine the roles of Central
Asian countries and external powers in arranging regional interactions
and conducting international negotiations. Particular attention will be
paid to such issues as social perception of interstate interactions,
culture and politics, structures and actors, identity negotiations and
power relations in Central Asia. Any knowledge of Central Asian
politics and geopolitics will be helpful in playing the interaction

Saudi Arabia and the Gulf: Looking for the Arab Spring

Wednesday, March 21: In the midst of the Arab Spring, Saudi Arabia
alone seems to have escaped public protests over corruption,
authoritarianism and the quest for more equitable sharing of benefits.
This impression masks the realities of life and reform within the
Kingdom. This presentation explores some of the ways in which Saudi
Arabia is working to address the challenges of the Arab Spring from a

Learning from the Great Tohoku Disaster

Wednesday, March 21: The Japanese International Cooperation Agency
(JICA), an implementing agency of official development assistance
(ODA), will present the outcomes of a study on how Japan, the
technological expert on disaster management, succumbed to the triple
disasters that occurred one year ago. The study will extract lessons
for disaster risk management and identify how international cooperation
agencies translate the lessons into more effective disaster risk

Asian Anxiety: Australia and the Asia-Pacific

Thursday, March 22: For Australia, a key U.S. cultural and military
ally in the Asia-Pacific, the task of managing an ambivalent
relationship to China and its regional neighbours is nothing new.
Australian political leaders have long been grappling with an
underlying anxiety about the nation’s geographical proximity to the
Asia-Pacific region. This seminar explore Australia’s political
leaders’ attempts across more than a century of election campaigns to
offer voters a secure sense of identity by managing this perceived
regional threat. Many of the same recurring themes of threat and
economic opportunity are echoed in President Obama’s ‘Pacific turn’.

Book Presentation: When Mystic Masters Meet

Thursday, March 22: This will be a book presentation featuring author
Syafaatun Almirzanah. This book is a study of the role of mystical
discourse and experience can play in Christian-Muslim dialogue as a
subset of interfaith dialogue in general. It concentrates on the work
of two great medieval mystic masters, one Muslim, the other Christian.
The Christian is a German Dominican mystic, Mesiter Eckhart. The Muslim
is Muhyi al-Din al-Arabi, a Sufi teacher known as the Greatest Master.

The Rise of Islamist Parties in the New Middle East

Thursday, March 22: America Abroad Media (AAM) and Georgetown
University’s Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs will
host a special 'Beyond the Broadcast' panel discussion focused on
Islamist movements in the Middle East. The event, which coincides with
the release of AAM's one-hour America Abroad documentary, The Rise of
Islamist Parties in the New Middle East, will feature Dr. Nathan Brown
of George Washington University and Dr. Jocelyne Cesari, Minerva Chair
at the National Defense University and Senior Research Fellow at the

Ariela Keysar: I Have No Religion But I Am Jewish

Thursday, March 22: Dr. Ariela Keysar, a demographer, is associate
research professor in public policy and law and the associate director
of the Institute for the Study of Secularism in Society and Culture at
Trinity College. She will speak on Jewish demography, comparing Jews
who identify themselves as Jews by religion and those who say they have

CCAS Annual Symposium

Thursday, March 22 and Friday, March 23: On March 22 and 23, CCAS will
explore the causes and outcomes of the so-called 'Arab Spring' for its
2012 Symposium, "’The People Want the Fall of the Regime’: The Arab
Uprisings and the Future of Arab Politics." The symposium will
explore issues more than one year after the beginning of the Arab
uprisings. Seven expert panels will assess these events, discuss their
historical significance, explore their underlying causes and analyze
what these dramatic developments mean for our understanding of Arab

J Street National Conference

Saturday, March 24-27: The J Street National Conference brings together
thousands of activists, lawyers, politicians, academics, analysts,
journalists and students for 3 days of learning, networking and
advocating. The conference will feature numerous of speakers on nearly
two dozen panels ranging from "The Arab Spring and Prospects for Peace"
to "The Impact of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict on America’s
Interests: A Military Perspective" to "Iran: The Nuclear Options." In
past years, speakers have included members of the Israeli Knesset,
members of the U.S. Congress and former National Security Advisor James
Jones. This year some of the notable speakers will be Israeli novelist
Amos Oz, former editor of The New Republic Peter Beinart and former
