The British Security Service (MI5): Past and Present

Friday, March 30: Christopher Andrew is Britain's leading historian of
intelligence, professor of modern and contemporary history, and former
President of Corpus Christi College and chair of the faculty of history
at Cambridge University. He is also chair of the British Intelligence
Study Group; founding coeditor of Intelligence and National Security;
former visiting professor at Harvard, the University of Toronto and the
Australian National University; and a regular presenter of BBC Radio

Book Launch: No One's World with Charles Kupchan

Monday, April 2: Although most strategists recognize that the dominance
of the West is on the wane, they are confident that its founding ideas
— democracy, capitalism and secular nationalism — will continue to
spread. In No One’s World: The West, the Rising Rest, and the Coming
Global Turn, Kupchan challenges this view, arguing that the world is
headed for political and ideological diversity. Kupchan is professor of
international affairs at Georgetown and Whitney Shepardson Senior
Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. He served on the National
Security Council during the Clinton presidency and is the author of How
Enemies Become Friends and The End of the American Era. Reception will

Maggie Paxson: Remembering the Good

Tuesday, April 3: Featuring Dr. Maggie Paxson, a visiting scholar at
Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies at the Elliott
School at George Washington University and a senior associate at the
Kennan Institute of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for
Scholars. She will present a lecture on social memory and the
resistance to violence in Le Chambon-sur-Lignon during WWII. Lunch will

Post-Revolutionary Women's Rights in Iran: Unlikely Feminist

Tuesday, April 3: Featuring Shireen Hunter, visiting professor,
ACMCU. With the fall of the Shah and the Islamization of society under
the Khomeini regime, Iranian feminists have been in debates on the role
of women in Islamic society. Dr. Hunter will shed light on some of
these debates and discuss the status of post-revolutionary women's

Learning from the Octopus

Wednesday, April 4: Featuring Dr. Rafe Sagarin, assistant research
scientists, Institute of the Environment, University of Arizona. The
most quoted and memorable line from the 9/11 Commission Report was that
the tragic events of that day represented a "failure of imagination."
Almost immediately, we cast that failure aside as we began to imagine
almost anything to be a threat to our security. The real problem in the
decade that followed 9/11 is that our failure of imagination has been
almost completely supplanted by a "failure of adaptation." Organisms
in nature, however, have been successfully using adaptation to survive
and thrive on a risk filled planet for billions of years. Sagarin will
share some of the secrets of nature for adaptation and discuss how they
can be applied to how we in society respond to unpredictable risks from
terrorism, to public health emergencies to climate change. 12pm,
