To my Friends, Colleagues and Readers,

I am very pleased to share with you some very exciting news. After careful consideration,
I have accepted the position of President/CEO for the AMIA (formerly the American
Medical Informatics Association) based in Washington, DC. AMIA is the premier,
multi-disciplinary association of informatics professionals in the United States.
AMIA's mission is to promote the use of information technology for advancing healthcare,
which has been one of my long-time professional passions extending back to my days
as the director for the rural health program at the University of North Dakota.

I accepted the position for several reasons. First, I believe that AMIA has a
critical role in helping to formulate effective policy related to the use of information
technology for increasing quality, reducing costs and enhancing services capability
in healthcare. Second, with the major investments that have been made in information
technology over the last decade, we are now positioned to take advantage of the
investment by focusing on analytics and population health. The members of AMIA
will clearly be at the forefront of those initiatives. Third, on a more personal
note, I am hoping to travel somewhat less than has been the norm of my career over
the last decade. While traveling and seeing the world is fun, it also can become
grueling at times. So, a "stay at home" position has its attractions...

I will be succeeding two very incredible informatics leaders, Dr. Donald Detmer
and Dr. Ted Shortliffe, who helped to establish AMIA as the leading voice for the
field of healthcare informatics. Clearly, these are big shoes to fill and I am
excited by the opportunity and challenge which that presents. Over the next several
months, I will be assessing the current strategy for AMIA and working with the
Board of Directors to establish directions for the next several years. We believe
there is ample opportunity for growth and I look forward to helping the Members
of AMIA advance the field as well as to make a difference in healthcare.

In addition, I will be keeping my old connection points alive; however, please note
that my new office will be located in Bethesda, adjacent to the Red Line on the
DC Metro very near the Bethesda Station. My address will be:
