_Share the View_ _Bloomberg View _ A Quick Look at Bloomberg News's Opinion Section for March 23, 2012 "Did you hear the latest joke about New Jersey?" asks View columnist Jonathan Weil, who's actually in no laughing mood. "A group of investigative journalists this week released a report calling it the least corruptible state in the country. How did that happen? Easy. We bribed them. All kidding aside, this is a state where in 2009 three mayors, two assemblymen and five rabbis were among 44 charged in a single money-laundering and bribery sting by the Federal Bureau of Investigation." More on Jersey's culture of corruption at the[2] link. Links: 2. http://bloom.bg/GP6DgY Well, maybe North Korea could use a little of the corruption, if only to temper the totalitarian craziness. "Here’s a prediction you can bet your 401(k) on: The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea will never give up its nuclear or missile programs," write the View editors, urging the U.S. to stay calm despite Kim Jong Un's bizarre satellite threat. "Some other regime might, but not this one. It’s got too much pride, prestige and paranoia invested in its arsenal ... So what do we do? The world needs to try to promote positive change in North Korea faster than the regime can build up its capacity to wreak havoc. One way to start is to help and engage North Korea’s people."[3] Link. Links: 3. http://bloom.bg/GGnaRd On the subject of foreign leaders under pressure, "a judge in Connecticut will soon decide whether to allow or dismiss a civil suit against Ernesto Zedillo, Mexico’s president from 1994 to 2000, accusing him of responsibility for the Acteal Massacre, which occurred on Dec. 22, 1997, in the southern state of Chiapas and resulted in the death of 45 villagers," writes View columnist Enrique Krauze. "Reliable inquiries have demonstrated something very different: The brutal crime was the consequence of local conflicts that not only preceded Zedillo’s government but continued beyond it. The accusation is clearly an attempt both to slander the reputation of a distinguished politician -- who will go down in history as a great facilitator of Mexican democracy." [4]Link. Links: 4. http://bloom.bg/GPzu2a "Of all the forms of discrimination that the law forbids -- racial, gender, sexual orientation in some states -- age discrimination is the one that nevertheless goes on most brazenly," notes View columnist Michael Kinsley -- who also points out that, for him, this hits home. "Corporate recruiters and human resource departments are carefully trained to talk in code, saying that they’re looking for 'fresh thinking' or 'energy, dedication and willingness to work long hours.' You know what they really mean. Hiring or promotion to top positions in government and private corporations doesn’t even pay lip service to equal opportunity for people over age 60 or so. Is this necessarily wrong?" [5]Link.
