How can we make good decisions when our peers aren't?


Notes from Sally
No assembly this week. 8th grade students will hear about Upper
School curriculum on Friday afternoon.


Parents are warmly invited to join us for Meeting for Worship on
Thursday morning from 8:10 - 8:40 in the Meeting Room.


Please note: the Hoops for Hunger event advertised in last week's
Tuesday Letter was postponed and will be held this Friday evening
from 5-7.


Please plan to stop by the Rubenstein Gallery when you are on campus
and see the Middle School art show! It will be up until mid- April.


Next Monday will be a regular class day. Minimester begins on
Tuesday morning. All students involved in local Minimester programs
should be receiving a permission slip and daily itinerary; please be
sure to return permission slips to the project leader. Unless noted
on the itinerary, students will begin and end their school day at the
regular time. The Shuttle Bus and Aftercare will operate normally
next week. Absences should be reported to Julia Porter in the office
and to one of the project leaders if possible. Please note any
suggestions for dress and things to bring for the week; this is a
good week to pay attention to the weather and dress accordingly since
many students will be spending significant time outdoors. A small
daypack and a water bottle are probably standard equipment for all
local programs!


Last call for items for the food drive. Helping Hands Minimester will
be delivering items to the Capital Area Food Bank next week!


We will be cleaning out the Lost and Found boxes over break and
donating unclaimed items. Please encourage your son or daughter to
track down things that may be missing.


St. Patrick's Episcopal Day School has invited our 7th and 8th grade
students to their St. Patrick's Dance. The dance will take place this
Friday, March 15, from 7:30 to 10:00 p.m. at the St. Patrick's Gym
located at 4700 Whitehaven Parkway, NW. The admission price is $5.00
and a canned food to support the CAFB. Appropriate casual dress is
recommended.


The National Building Museum on F Street has just opened a Green
Schools exhibit, and we are proud that the Middle School building is
included! The exhibit is open until next January.


Congratulations to the Sidwell Friends Math Counts Team, which won
the overall team competition and swept all top six individual places
at the State Math Counts competition on Saturday against an array of
the area's best private and public schools. (This is the first time
in DC Math Counts history that one school has swept all of the top
six spots at the State Competition.) 8th graders Amal Mattoo (1st
place), Luke Oh (2nd place), Alan Zhang (3rd place), and 7th grader
Kevin Jiang (4th place) will be forming the team that represents the
District of Columbia at the National Math Counts competition in
Washington, DC in May. 8th graders Jason Souvaliotis (5th place) and
Jordan Chernof (6th place) will be alternates in case a team member
cannot attend the national competition. 8th grader Casey Dorfman and
6th grader Mitchell Jubeir also competed at the State competition and
fared quite well. These mathletes should take great pride in their
phenomenal accomplishment!


Congratulations, seventh grader Isabel Kirsch! After winning our
middle school bee and taking a written test, she qualified to
represent Sidwell Friends at the state level of the National
Geographic Bee. She will compete on Friday, April 5, 2013 here in
Washington for a chance to go on to the national bee. Good luck,
Isabel!


Math Counts
Congratulations to 8th graders Alan Zhang, Amal Mattoo, Casey Dorfman
and Harry Weinstein, our newest Mathematicians of the Month. All of
them correctly solved the middle school wide January/February Math
Challenge. Check out their ingenious solutions on the Math Bulletin
Board on the 5/6 Hallway or the Math Counts Bulletin Board right
outside Mr. C's room. The final Math Challenge of the school year
will be posted in April.


(Note: Math Counts will continue to meet on Thursdays in Mr. C's
room from 3:30-4:30. It is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th graders.)

This will be a conversation about the two upcoming Supreme Court
cases that will be argued on March 26 and 27: Hollingsworth v. Perry,
dealing with California's ban on gay marriage, and United States v.
Windsor, dealing with the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Our
speakers will include Adam Liptak, Esq., Supreme Court correspondent
for the New York Times and author of The New York Times "Sidebar"
column 2007 and Paul Smith, Esq, chair of the Appellate and Supreme
Court Practice Group of Jenner & Block. Mr. Smith has argued 14
Supreme Court cases, including the landmark gay rights case, Lawrence
v. Texas in 2003.

Community Service Corner
Annual Middle School Food Collection


How can we help hungry families and kids in our area? Contribute to
the Middle School Winter Food Collection! All items must be in by
Monday, March 18 for Miss Nick and her Helping Hands Minimester crew
to organize and deliver during Minimester week. Drop off tables are
located in the first floor hallway across from the office.


Family Service Project at Mary's Center


On March 17 the Upper School is sponsoring a Family Service Project
at Mary's Center, and all are welcome to attend! Please contact

April's Abundance of Parent Events


A confluence of prior planning, new needs and new opportunities has
led the scheduling of SFS visits by three terrific speakers. The
Parents Association, Principals and Counselors recognize that this is
an abundance of riches in the month of April. We thought we would
announce them together to both encourage you to take advantage of all
of them and to let you know that when opportunities arise to take
advantage of high quality experts we move - even if it results in a
little jamming on the calendar.

Announcements from Bethesda Friends Meeting
On Sunday, April 7th, Joyce Ajlouny , Director of Ramallah Friends
School will speak at Bethesda Friends Meeting, on "Life at Ramallah
Friends School in the West Bank Today." The 12:30 p.m. forum is
sponsored by the Peace and Social Justice committee. Those unable to
attend can still hear Joyce talk about RFS on Sunday, April 21st at
1:15 p.m. at Sandy Spring Friends Meeting , 17715 Meeting House Road,
Sandy Spring, MD 20860.


Mary's Center Family Service Project
Wall and Mural Painting!


Join us for the second Family Service Project of the year. On March
17th from 10 - 2 Bring the family, all school age kids are welcome,
to help paint Mary's Center. Mary's Center in Adam's Morgan, founded
by Sidwell Friends parent Maria Gomez provides heath care, social
services and literacy services to over 30,000 people who would not
otherwise have access. It serves people from 110 countries. It is
located at 2333 Ontario Rd in Adams Morgan. There is plenty of
parking. Behrends Builders will be helping with distributing supplies
and overseeing the task at hand. Its a great opportunity to do
something fun as a family and give back to the community.

Community Meeting for Worship
Parents of Middle School students are invited to attend Meeting for
Worship with their child on Thursday, March 14, 8:10 - 8:40 a.m., in
the Smith Meeting House. For Quakers, wisdom begins in silence. This
is a wonderful way for parents to experience Meeting, take part in
your child's education, and demonstrate the value of silent worship.
