This year’s production, a close collaboration between students of all three divisions and a result of months of rehearsal, offered a powerful, poetic, and visually striking statement about social justice and the importance of speaking out against racial injustice and violence. I hope many of you were able to attend the Friday night performance. Members of the Black Student Union will work with EJC Director Philip McAdoo and ECJ Coordinator Hayes Davis to organize a student conversation about the messages presented in the show. I would like to remind you again that Wednesday, February 17, is our annual Upper School Curriculum Night. The 2016/17 Curriculum Guide will be posted on the School website on February 16. PARENTING AND PEER GROUP SPEAKER The Parenting and Peer Group Committee, along with your Grade Representatives, warmly invite you to a parent peer group meeting on Tuesday, March 8, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. Judge Brian Kim, a former Sidwell Friends parent, will speak on some of the legal ramifications for parents and teens regarding alcohol consumption. Come hear answers to questions such as: What if my child is at a party where there is alcohol but they are not drinking? What if I host a gathering of teenagers and alcohol is present, but I did not provide it and did not know it was there? And much, much more. Here is your chance to hear from a former sitting judge in Montgomery County about what you as a parent need to know. After Judge Kim speaks, the group will split up by grade for facilitated discussions. We look forward to seeing everyone! Light refreshments will be served. GAMETIME! SWIM AND DIVE The final winter GAMETIME! event is this week. Come cheer the boys' and girls' swim and dive teams in their senior meet against St. Albans and NCS. The meet is at St. Albans at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, February 19. Special fan treats and rally towels will be available at the St. Albans pool. To get to the pool from the Wisconsin Avenue campus, take Wisconsin Avenue south. At Garfield Street, one block south of Massachusetts Avenue, turn left. That street intersects Massachusetts. Cross over Massachusetts, and the school and pool are on your left. Fan photos should be sent to communications@sidwell.edu. Go Quakers!!! A send-off for the team will take place on the front porch of the Upper School at 2:30 p.m. SAVE THE DATE: A NIGHT FOR SCHOLARS: APRIL 9 Don't forget to mark your calendars for this year's spring fundraiser, A Night for Scholars, on Saturday, April 9, 2016, which will feature special guest Abby Wambach. All proceeds benefit student financial aid at Sidwell Friends. Stay tuned for invitations dropping next week. If you’re interested in learning more about the event and how you can help, please contact Jessie Jacobson, director of special events, at jacobsonj@sidwell.edu or 202-537-8442. A NIGHT FOR SCHOLARS: SPONSORSHIP AND PROGRAM ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITIES The 2016 spring fundraiser, A Night for Scholars, will take place on Saturday, April 9, in the Sidwell Friends Athletic Center, featuring special guest Abby Wambach. All proceeds benefit student financial aid at Sidwell Friends. The success of this event will depend on the support of many individuals and businesses. This year, in lieu of donated goods and services, we are only seeking program advertisers and event sponsors. By advertising in the event program and becoming an event sponsor, your business will be showcased to more than 8,000 members of the Sidwell Friends community. View the Event Sponsorship Agreement and Program Advertising Agreement. The deadline for advertising and sponsorship is February 26. Questions? Please contact Jessie Jacobson, director of special events, at jacobsonj@sidwell.edu or 202-537-8442. Thank you for your support of our efforts to raise money for student financial aid. SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR 2016 TENNIS ROUND ROBIN The SFS Tennis Round Robin is coming! This year’s event will celebrate the continued growth of our tennis program and gather SFS tennis enthusiasts of all ages and skill sets for a day of matches and fun. Please save the date for the SFS Tennis Tournament to take place on Sunday, May 22, from 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center. Thank you for your support! SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR 2016 NEXT-TO-NEW SALE Sidwell Friends’ popular sale of quality used items will return next October, and we need your help to make this event more successful than ever! We need your help organizing and pricing donations, cashiering, assisting on Charity Day, etc. Whether you have one hour of time to give or more, we strongly encourage you to volunteer for the Next-to-New Sale. This is a great way to meet other members of the Sidwell Friends community and support student financial aid. AN ARTRAGEOUS THANK YOU AND UPCOMING EVENT Thanks to all of you who made Artrageous 2016 a fun afternoon. To the many performers, parent volunteers, and faculty and staff who shared their expertise, we say thank you. To those of you who came for entertainment and to explore your inner artist at our craft tables and master classes, we hope you had a good time. Thanks also to the many student groups who provided sustaining chili, pizza, cupcakes, cookies, floats, hot chocolate, and water. The Arts Committee welcomes your feedback and suggestions. Please take a minute to fill out the simple survey here or e-mail your comments to PA.Arts@sidwell.edu. On February 16 at 7:00 p.m. in Zartman House Drawing Room, the Arts Committee will have its post-Artrageous potluck celebration and meeting to discuss the future of Artrageous. We encourage you to attend if you were one of those who had fun, helped, and/or would like to see this tradition continue. If you would like to bring a dish to share, please sign up here. In the meantime, we are still in the very early stages of planning and are reaching out to our extremely talented parent community to help out. If you would like to volunteer, please do take a look at our Celebration Sign-up. Thank you. ---Renee Fried, MS co-clerk Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS What is Quaker humor like? Well, understandably in a group that has dressed oddly, talked oddly, and acted oddly for centuries, most Quaker humor pokes fun at the practices and peculiarities of Friends themselves. . . . Alarmed by noises in the night, a Friend creeps downstairs—and finds a burglar busy rifling through her drawers and cabinets. Outraged (but mindful of Quaker values of nonviolence, respect for that of God in others, and truth-telling) she firmly announces: “Excuse me, Friend, but I am about to shoot where thee is standing.” Many jokes, of course, are Quaker versions of themes that are common across faith communities: Quaker: Doctor, is there anything you can do about my snoring? Doctor: Why are you concerned? Many people snore. Is your snoring disturbing your partner? Quaker: Oh, no, she’s used to it. But I’ve been told that it really bothers everyone else at Meeting for Worship. Quaker quotes alternate with questions about Quakerism in this newsletter feature. To ask a question about Quaker history or practice, e-mail our Sidwell Friends Quaker Life Committees’ authors at quakerquestions@sidwell.edu!
