The economy added 151,000 jobs in January, the Labor Department reported today, down from 262,000 in December.

Unemployment was 4.9 percent, essentially unchanged from December's 5 percent.

Average hourly private-sector earnings were up 12 cents. In December they were down a penny.

Analysts had predicted job growth of about 188,000, an unemployment rate of 5 percent and an increase in hourly earnings of 0.3 percent, according to a Bloomberg survey of economists.
