ONE ON ONE - "Clinton and Sanders get ugly," by POLITICO's Gabriel Debenedetti in Durham, N.H.: "Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders viciously attacked each other's progressive credentials at Thursday night's debate, with Clinton accusing Sanders of smearing her record and treating her differently because she's a woman. An uncomfortable Sanders was taken aback, responding, 'Whoa, whoa, whoa ... wow.' The former secretary of state was ready to lob some grenades at the Vermont senator, after the two spent much of this week engaging in a war of words. 'If you've got something to say, say it, directly,' said Clinton of Sanders' repeated insinuations that she is beholden to her big money donors.
'It's time to end the very artful smear that you and your campaign have been carrying out.'"

- "Sanders on Thursday night sidestepped Clinton's accusation of veiled sexist attacks, while not pulling any punches when it came to Clinton's progressive record. ... After pledging early on to not engage in any negative attacks on his rival, Sanders has more pointedly called out Clinton for her record and used the poison 'E' word - establishment." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=6e22811a2b644115d11ae09b9350617c678a5dae07e1c7fd42116c36ca0fbf6b

- "11 most important moments of the Democratic debate," by POLITICO's Kyle Cheney: Clinton's "a progressive is someone who makes progress line" ... Her touting endorsements from Sanders' home state ... The "very artful smear" line, as energetic a salvo as Clinton has delivered against Sanders all campaign ... Clinton stepping in it explaining her big speaking fees ... Sanders on "the business model of Wall Street is fraud" ... Sparring over the Iraq War vote from 2002 ... A potential inquest into the Iowa caucus results ... "Clinton '100 percent confident' emails won't drag her down." THIS YEAR'S MODEL - "Self-funding candidates adopt Trump rhetoric," by Campaign Pro's Elena Schneider and Kevin Robillard: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=6e22811a2b6441151d076aaf2625d5846debba5cd4d34783a7fb7a384f7a6dc6

SURPRISE OR YAWN? - Shelby, McConnell polls show two different Senate primary races in Alabama: GOP Sen. Richard Shelby and his primary challenger, Jonathan McConnell, have very different takes on whether their March 1 primary will be the next big incumbent primary surprise - or just another run-of-the-mill renomination. McConnell's camp touted a robopoll Thursday showing Shelby leading McConnell 55 percent to 25 percent - "just barely above the threshold to avoid a runoff," McConnell consultant James Harris wrote. Shelby's internals tell a vastly different story. Pollster Jim McLaughlin responded to Campaign Pro with his own survey showing Shelby taking 75 percent of the primary vote to 9
percent for McConnell. Full memos here: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bebcf9dc648aa14ce96c9348de3ca756ae2da04e313dc47d4c9a390a208cb78 and http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bebcf9dc648aa145dc58dc25987b4e4a53581c5b3abbf72a942557bd01a6077

CAMPAIGN (FINANCE) TACTICS - "Cash-flush PAC pushes campaign finance as winning Democratic issue," by Campaign Pro's Theodoric Meyer: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=6e22811a2b644115376d5c7ad3959bf9e3a0a28d001239e0b597fa2b336abf9a

FIRST ON FILINGS - Edwards raises $601,000 for Maryland Senate race but spends even more: Democratic Rep. Donna Edwards, who's facing off with Rep. Chris Van Hollen in the Democratic primary, raised about $601,000 in the fourth quarter, according to her campaign's Federal Election Commission report. But she spent nearly $700,000, and her cash on hand dropped to less than $300,000 at the end of the year. Van Hollen's campaign raised $1.1 million in the quarter, giving him $3.7 million in cash on hand. Edwards does have the support of EMILY's List, which has booked $1 million in ads backing her ahead of the April 26 primary.

- Fleming has $2.3 million on hand for Senate run: GOP Rep. John Fleming has nearly $2.3 million on hand for his Louisiana Senate bid - roughly the same amount he had in his House campaign account three months earlier.

FIRST IN SCORE - Maloney will endorse Teachout in NY-19: Less than two weeks after she got into the race for the open seat in New York's 19th District, Zephyr Teachout has her first congressional endorsement. Democratic Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, who represents the neighboring 18th District, will endorse Teachout this morning in New Paltz. Maloney is backing Teachout, a Fordham law professor who won 33 percent of the vote when she challenged Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the primary in 2014, over Will Yandik, a farmer and deputy town supervisor who announced his campaign this week.

PERSONNEL MOVES - Kroll joins Go BIG Media: Chase Kroll is the new vice president for corporate digital at Go BIG Media, based in Washington. Kroll comes from David Turch & Associates and also worked as GOP Rep. Michele Bachmann's campaign manager in 2012.

PRESIDENTIAL SPEED READ - "Clinton camp to Sanders: Stop the Iowa conspiracy theories," by POLITICO's Gabriel Debenedetti in Manchester, N.H.: "The Democratic presidential primary has moved on from Iowa to New Hampshire - and so has Hillary Clinton after her razor-thin win in the caucus state Monday. In a Medium post that the campaign will publish on Friday morning titled "Hillary Clinton Won Iowa. End of Story.," Clinton Iowa state director Matt Paul pushes back against the Bernie Sanders campaign's suggestion that misreported results in individual precincts could make the difference there, and dismisses its "conspiracy theories" about the Iowa Democratic Party's systems. ... Paul's post
comes as the Sanders camp calls its captains in every precinct around the state to verify the official results in what could be the first step of a convoluted challenge process. The Des Moines Register editorial board - which endorsed Clinton - on Thursday called for an audit of the final numbers." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bebcf9dc648aa14bfa337a39e078d6d3959149e0609f304f22ee6e2813b73df

- Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker will endorse Chris Christie: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bebcf9dc648aa14a63c5ff770edea77ae3b9ea4a4d3cf2cb2c9aa900c9e1c12

- "Jeanette Rubio hits the trail," by POLITICO's Anna Palmer in Exeter, N.H.: Most of the 2016 candidate spouses -from Bill Clinton to Mary Pat Christie - spent the run-up to the Iowa caucus in a mad political dash, playing the role of stand-in, kissing babies and giving speeches. Except for Jeanette Rubio." Her low profile "is emblematic of her back-seat role in Rubio's 2016 campaign, which is partly because she is fundamentally a more private person than her husband. But it is also is based on the need to supervise the children's homework, school activities and sports while her husband has been on the road trying to become the Republican nominee. Nonetheless, her infrequent appearances on
the trail are in striking contrast to the other Republican spouses who have actively engaged on the stump to humanize their spouses in the eyes of voters, especially among a key electoral bloc - women voters - here." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bebcf9dc648aa14599798166d97669a1c1aec6b695e942c42e1d92f565cfe3b

- "Hillary Clinton's new unlikely ally in email controversy: Colin Powell," by The Washington Post's Karen DeYoung and Greg Miller: "Hillary Clinton gained an apparent ally Thursday in her fight to limit the political damage from her growing email controversy, as former Republican secretary of state Colin L. Powell said he disagreed with a State Department decision to retroactively classify two emails from his personal account while in office.'I have reviewed the messages, and I do not see what makes them classified,' Powell said of the emails, which were uncovered late last year by the State Department's inspector general and, he said, brought to his attention by the department in recent
weeks." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bebcf9dc648aa149e42fe7685a39a16ec477f10f67f6813cb7b5ac89bc279aa

- "Marco Rubio praises military service of American Muslims," by BuzzFeed News' McKay Coppins in Salem, N.H.: "A day after sharply criticizing President Obama's speech at a mosque, Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio acknowledged the military service of patriotic Muslim Americans, and drew a distinction between them and the terrorist 'animals' that threaten the country. 'Look, if you go to the national cemeteries in America, it's full of crosses and Stars of David, but you'll see some crescent moons, too,' Rubio told voters here Thursday night." His comments came after "a voter told Rubio he appreciated the candidate's 'unifying' message, but said, 'I'd just like you to include
[Muslims] in your vision of representing all Americans.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bebcf9dc648aa14d486c495389d6bea6ad571c2bc9441b9a372f307520c232b

CODA - QUOTE OF THE DAY: "It had to have been 1964. I would have been 11-year-old Jeb." - Jeb Bush, recalling the first time he hit the trail with his mother, campaigning for his father in his failed first run for Senate. Barbara Bush campaigned alongside Jeb once again in New Hampshire on Thursday. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bebcf9dc648aa146d20b7b445197ee9da77a5cddf6f7410b5664829ce3889aa
