Hurricane Katrina washed out rail service along that portion of the Gulf Coast in 2005. The highway and transit bill enacted in December ordered up the group, which is led by FRA and composed of representatives from Amtrak, the Southern Rail Commission, affected states and regional transportation planners. "For the region to stay competitive and grow, it needs a strong transportation system that includes passenger rail service," FRA Administrator Sarah Feinberg said in a statement. "Today brings us closer to returning passenger rail service to the Gulf Coast, and the Federal Railroad Administration looks forward to working the region to put passenger trains back on the tracks." Representatives of the Southern Rail Commission and Amtrak will visit the region Thursday to inspect existing infrastructure and study how intercity rail service would affect the area, according to Mississippi GOP Sen. Roger Wicker's office.
