The assembly this week will be the 5/6 Talent Show. We will begin at 2:00 in the Drama Studio. Parents are welcome to join us. 7/8 will not have an assembly. Reminder to 8th grade parents: Come take a closer look at your child’s home away from home for the next four years. Diana Lazarus, Ninth Grade Dean, will conduct an informal tour of the Upper School on Friday, May 21st at 8:00. No need to RSVP. The tour will begin at the Upper School Dean’s Office (arts center end of the main floor) where you should sign in and pick up a visitor badge.
We are pleased to announce that the Administrative Counsel has approved the extension of the laptop pilot for next year. All 6th through 8th grade students will be issued new Asus tablet netbooks. The new computer will be much smaller and lighter than the current 7th grade model yet with a larger screen and keyboard than the current 6th grade model. Computers will be stored in protective sleeves and carried in backpacks, eliminating the need to carry an extra bag. To get acquainted with the new machines, all students, along with one parent, will be required to attend a three-hour training session during the summer. The computers will be issued during these training sessions and multiple topics, including responsible use, will be covered. Numerous training times will be available starting in August as well as before school begins in September. Look for an online registration soon. All 6th and 7th graders will be turning in their current laptops at the end of the year. Students should turn in the computer, the bag, the power brick, and the stylus. Students will be charged for missing items in accordance with the Acceptable Use Agreement that students and parents signed at the beginning of the year.
Several parents have asked – there is no school on Memorial Day, May 31st.
The middle school library is missing more than 50 books from the fiction shelves. This means the books are not on the shelves and they are not checked out to anybody. Would you please check around your home for books that are the property of the Middle School library?

Summer reading lists have been posted on the Library section of the website. (Students entering 7th grade received a copy of the reading list with their transition packets.)
The Amethyst Trio, including 8th graders Benny Miller-Gootnick and Adam Heins recently played a benefit concert and raised $1000 for Partners in Health.
We have two Middle School students appearing in outside theater productions. Becca Richie is performing in The Comedy of Errors at the Round House Theater in Silver Spring May 15th and 16th and May 21st and 22nd. Becca is in the "green" cast. And Lee Doyle will be appearing in Once Upon a Big Bang at Imagination Stage in Bethesda over the weekend of June 4-6.
Some faculty accomplishments:
Tim Reagan had a poem about teaching drama published in the spring issue of Teaching Theater magazine.
David Wood and Margaret Pennock have been busy writing curriculum materials for several outside organizations, including the Earth Day Network, Environmental Education Week, and PBS (they wrote the teacher lesson plans for the American Experience program on Earth Day.) In addition, Dave has been chosen to participate in the Fulbright program with American and Japanese teachers on the topic of Education for Sustainable Development. In addition to a recent meeting in San Francisco, he will be traveling to Japan for two weeks in June for further discussions and work on the topic.

Please join fellow parents, students, faculty, and staff as we say thank you to Interim Head of School Steve Barker, Interim US Principal Ellis Turner, and US Assistant Principal and Dean of Students Rebecca Zug for their remarkable service this year. The PA and School will host an appreciation/farewell reception on May 19th from 5 – 6 pm in the US Dining Room (to be held outside weather-permitting!). If you have spent money on behalf of the Parents Association this year, please note that the last date to submit receipts for reimbursement will be Tuesday, June 15, 2010. Please check with PA Division Clerks or PA Presidents to verify your budget. Note that original receipts only will be accepted and downloadable forms must be signed by the Clerks or Presidents.
