Senate leadership has said that a vote on a bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA) will be held by the end of June. This morning, the Senate released a draft version of their legislation, titled the Better Care Reconciliation Act.
The upcoming vote will be held without a single hearing or the input of patient, consumer and medical groups, or policy experts. The legislation was drafted by only a handful of Senators behind closed doors. The ALS Association, along with partner patient organizations, have been urging the Senate to use a bipartisan approach when making decisions on any legislation that makes changes to our current healthcare system. Republicans and Democrats should work together to craft a bill that ensures better access to healthcare for all - but particularly for those with serious and chronic healthcare conditions such as people living with ALS.
The ALS Association encourages Senators to vote NO on any bill that has not had the benefit of hearings and a full review of the impact it would have on people living with ALS - and all Americans. We do not believe this is a partisan issue - Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle have expressed concerns about the process in the Senate. And Senators need to hear from our community.

Please ask them to commit to legislation that maintains basic principles of health care, the same principles that The ALS Association continues to fight for on behalf of those living with ALS. Any health care reform must provide affordable, accessible, adequate, and understandable health insurance; access to care; and patient protections, such as no penalty for pre-existing conditions.
The ALS Association is committed to working proactively with both parties in Congress and with other patient advocacy groups toward a proposal that ensures all American have affordable access to the care they need.
