Truman National Security Project ! At the end of each month, we highlight some of the advocacy work, events, and other activities of the Truman community across the nation. This month, Truman announced keynote speakers at TruCon17, held a Memorial Day Rose Drop Ceremony in San Diego, protested President Trump’s suspicious firing of former FBI Director James Comey, and presented Military 101 trainings in Austin.


Kamal KalsiKamal S. Kalsi, DO was the first Sikh in a generation to be granted a religious accommodation by the military for his turban and beard. He completed his Fellowship in Emergency Medical Services and Disaster Medicine and trained in Israel to learn about their Disaster Preparedness and Response. He joined the U.S. Army in 2001, deploying to Afghanistan in 2011 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, in which he treated thousands of combat casualties and earned a Bronze Star Medal for his service. He is a member of Truman National Security Project's Defense Council. Kalsi is currently in the Army Reserves and the medical officer for the 404th Civil Affairs Battalion in Fort Dix, NJ.


Kalsi continues to fight intolerance and discrimination with his signature camo and pink turbans. For the last decade, he has led a multi-pronged effort to help change military policy so that Sikhs and other religious minorities can serve with their articles of faith; in January 2017, thanks in no small part to his efforts, the Army finally issued a directive that created allowances for turbans, beards, hijabs, and dreadlocks. Through Truman's TruDiversity initiative, Kalsi was able to leverage networks both on Capitol Hill and inside the Pentagon to connect with decision makers and share the story of his struggle to serve in the nation he loves. Through his writings, Kalsi has vocally opposed the Trump Administration's Muslim travel ban, anti-immigration, and anti-refugee
policies. He continues to advocate for national security policies that are inclusive, informed, and data-driven.

Memorial Day Rose Drop

At dawn on Memorial Day, Truman Center for National Security and Truman National Security Project, San Diego Chapter, hosted its third annual Rose Drop Ceremony at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. More than 600 volunteers gathered for a brief ceremony and heard from Shawn VanDiver (San Diego Chapter Director and Navy veteran), Anthony Robinson (Truman Director of Training and Public Engagement and Marine Corps veteran), Shannon McCombie (a Gold Star family member), as well as other members of the Truman National Security Project. Afterwards, the volunteers placed a single rose at headstones across the cemetery to honor them. The volunteers included active duty military, veterans, military families, gold star families, elected officials from the federal, state, municipal, and special
district levels, and local community members. The Truman San Diego Memorial Day Sunrise Rose Drop began in 2015 with 1,000 roses dropped and 20 participants. In 2016, there were 6,600 roses dropped and 140 volunteers. This year, 30,000 roses were dropped and more than 600 people volunteered.


Protesting Interference in the Russia Investigation

In both the statement and speech, Breen argued that the President of the United States cannot be allowed to simply fire senior law enforcement officials who are actively investigating his very own administration. He then called for the appointment of a special prosecutor and an independent, bipartisan commission to conduct its own thorough, sufficiently resourced investigation into potential ties between the Trump campaign and Administration and Putin’s regime in Russia.


Military 101 Briefing for Texas’ Progressive Community

In late April, Truman Director of Training and Public Engagement Anthony Robinson and Truman Fellow Jim Morin presented several Military 101 trainings in Austin, Texas. Military 101 covers everything from high-level questions about the values of those who serve in the military all the way down to details about the differences between the various branches and ranks. This training particularly sought to develop effective communication of shared values across Texas veterans and military families and progressive communities. Organizations in attendance included Progress Texas, Women Veterans Strategic Alliance, Indivisible Austin, and the Texas Democratic Party. Coming out of the training, Ed Espinoza, Director of Progress Texas, and Manny Garcia, Deputy Executive Director of the Texas
Democratic Party, pledged to work with the Texas Chapter in a greater role moving forward.
