When you’re talking about the LA rock scene(s) so many extraordinary musicians stand out. I immediately go to the Beach Boys and then it’s the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Browne. And then there’s the band called X.

When I was sitting in the BBQ join in Venice Beach last week another disheveled object of art adorning the walls was a signed poster of X’s co-lead singer John Doe. Doe is a legend in LA. So are his bandmates Exene Cervenka, guitarist Billy Zoom and drummer D. J. Bonebrake. The band transcended rock and roll genres and produced some of the most brilliant music of the 80s (X's first two studio albums, Los Angeles and Wild Gift, were ranked by Rolling Stone as being among the 500 greatest albums of all time.)

In ’83, X released “More Fun in the New World” which moved the band away from punk rock and more into the mainstream. It blew me away and still does. Seems like it blew David Letterman away too (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKjk8JSq6Wo&utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=f549af807b-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_06_21&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-f549af807b-145367789) .
