R.Hunter: For far too many of our fellow Americans, voting remains a privilege, not a right. This is not only troubling - it poses a fundamental threat to our democracy.

Ever since the Supreme Court's 2013 decision to strike down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act, Republican-controlled statehouses from North Carolina to North Dakota have implemented restrictions that make it harder for many to participate in our electoral process.

Such efforts are destructive and dangerous. They are discriminatory, unconscionable attacks on a core tenet of our democracy: that every American has the right to make their voice heard.

Sadly, support for voter suppression has now reached even the highest office in the land, as President Trump himself has created a so-called "Commission on Election Integrity." This committee is - at its most honest - a futile attempt to validate the president's groundless claims of voter fraud and a pretext for future suppression.

The president's commission is not just a poorly masked attempt to justify his disproven claims of "voter fraud" in November's election. It is a vehicle through which he can advance attempts to systematically stifle the voices of communities of color.

R.Hunter, it is upsetting that voting rights are even a matter of debate in 2017. It is also deeply troubling that five states have approved new restrictions this year alone - reforms, like voter ID laws, that target minorities' access to the ballot box "with almost surgical precision," as one court phrased it.

This is unacceptable - and it begs a response right now from every single one of us who believes that the right to vote should be inarguable. Add your name to reject Trump's voter suppression efforts.
