The life of Dr. B Amie Parnes on 6/4/2010 11:44 AM Second lady Jill Biden has remained largely out of the limelight since her hubby became vice president — so much that her students at Northern Virginia Community College only have "a vague awareness" of her stature in the world. In a revealing profile in Marie Claire, Biden, who is called "Dr. B" in the classroom, admitted that once, when a student asked her if she was related to the vice president, she replied, "Yes, we are related." In the profile, Biden says that she always dresses up for class. "I think it's important how I come across to my students," she said. "I want my students to see how professional women dress." On Tuesdays and Thursdays, when she's in full-on teacher mode, Biden "rises at 6 a.m.; dresses, gobbles toast, coffee, and a 2 percent Fage yogurt; and hustles out the door for the 30-minute commute" to her school, the magazine reports. And even though she's used to having an audience, she admits she's a bit shy: "I think I pull back a bit" in front of a crowd, she said. "I'm better one on one." In the profile, Biden dishes other things, too, large and small. Asked if she does her own laundry and "sorts her husband's soiled underthings just like us," Biden replied "Oh, yeah." Speaking about her relationship with first lady Michelle Obama, Biden said, "We're two women at different stages of life. I'm a grandmother. She has her full life with her two girls, so I respect her time with her family, she respects mine." "We love it when we're together, but the four of us — each is going in a totally different direction and on a different schedule," she continued. During downtime, however, their schedules do have some overlap. Biden's granddaughter Maisy plays on the same basketball team as Sasha Obama, and the two couples were both at a game one day in recent months as the youngsters' match went into overtime. "We just had this glimpse of normalcy," the first lady tells the magazine. "Our families sitting together, all worked up about a game that went into overtime — just enjoying being there together."
