Museum of Arts and Design The Jerome and Simona Chazen Building 2 Columbus Circle, New York City About the Exhibition: Derrick Adams: Sanctuary (http://madmuseum.org/exhibition/derrick-adams-sanctuary) January 25, 2018 to August 12, 2018 Derrick Adams: Sanctuary (http://madmuseum.org/exhibition/derrick-adams-sanctuary) includes 50 works of mixed-media collage, assemblage on wood panels, and sculpture presented in a site-specific installation designed by the artist and reimagines safe destinations for the black American traveler during Jim Crow-era America. Sanctuary was inspired by The Negro Motorist Green Book, an annual guidebook that directed black travelers to places and businesses that were welcoming during an era when open and often legally prescribed discrimination against people of color was widespread. The depiction of black America at leisure, and the politicization of that act, is a theme of continued interest to Adams, particularly as it pertains to the pursuit of the “American Dream.” Major support for Derrick Adams: Sanctuary is provided by Exhibition Chairs Michael and Patti Dweck. Additional support is generously provided by Barbara T. Hoffman, Esq., Ron and Ann Pizzuti, and the Joyce and George Wein Foundation. Derrick Adams is proudly represented in New York by Tilton Gallery. Community Engagement Partner: Also on View: Fellow Focus: Camille Hoffman (http://madmuseum.org/exhibition/fellow-focus-camille-hoffman) January 18, 2018 to April 8, 2018 6th Floor | Project Space In Pieceable Kingdom, MAD’s Spring 2017 Van Lier Fellow Camille Hoffman presents new mixed-media artworks that offer meditations on Manifest Destiny and its latent representation in the romantic American landscape. For her Fellow Focus exhibition, Hoffman explores the interconnectedness of her personal identity with American colonialism, environmental policy, and contemporary pop culture. Dedicated to highlighting the work of alumni of the Van Lier Fellowship (http://www.madmuseum.org/content/artist-studios-application) , part of MAD’s Artist Studios Program (http://www.madmuseum.org/programs/artist-studios) , Fellow Focus invites emerging artists to showcase the artwork they produced while in residence at the Museum. Funds for the Van Lier Fellowship are provided by the New York Community Trust Van Lier Fellowship Program, which supports talented, culturally diverse, economically challenged young people who are seriously dedicated to careers in the arts. http://madmuseum.org Photo by Terrence C.
