Monthly Newsletter from JVC Northwest with news, updates, resources, & job opportunities. Message from the Executive Director Greetings to you in 2018! We wish many blessings for you and your loved ones in this New Year! This week we remember and celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who in his understanding of Christianity, inspired generations of people to act grounded in nonviolence and love when encountering bigotry and hatred in the continuing march for justice and equality. Despite the great challenges we face in light of injustice, racism, diminishing resources, and a rapidly changing climate, I am offered glimpses of hopefulness in the service our Jesuit Volunteers (JVs) and JV EnCorps members provide every day, as well as the many ways former JVs are striving to make a difference in their homes, workplaces, and communities. All are following a path offered to us in a much loved verse, Micah 6:8: Only to do justice and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God. Together, we can – and do - make positive changes in our world. -Jeanne Haster Join the JVC Northwest team! Now accepting applications for the Director of Programs role We are hiring a Director of Programs to oversee the Jesuit Volunteer/AmeriCorps Program and the Jesuit Volunteer EnCorps Program. Crossroads Call Send in your FJV Updates! Follow the JV Reflects Blog for stories from JVs Throughout this year, three JVs in Anchorage, Seattle, and Hood River will be sharing stories from their year of service—particularly how they see faith and justice intersecting in community, in service, and within our country. We invite you to follow along with this blog series! Click here and sign up under Subscribe. The #JVReflects Blog is a collaboration between Ignatian Solidarity Network, JVC, and JVC Northwest. Do you have a blog, book, movie, podcast, song, poem, article, etc. you want to share? Email Anthony. Activist-academic Meg-John Barker and cartoonist Julia Scheele illuminate the histories of queer thought and LGBTQ+ action in this groundbreaking non-fiction graphic novel. From identity politics and gender roles to privilege and exclusion, Queer explores how we came to view sex, gender, and sexuality in the ways that we do; how these ideas get tangled up with our culture and our understanding of biology, psychology and sexology; and how these views have been disputed and challenged. "A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death." "Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence," Rev. Martin Luther King Junior's most controversial speech, describes how Americans were on the wrong side of a revolution, and how US soldiers in Vietnam forced Vietnamese families to live in concentration camps. To listen to the full speech click here.
