This time one year ago, thanks to all of your hard work, I was sworn in as Delaware's sole Representative in Congress -- the first woman and the first African-American to hold that position.


As I was sworn in, I held a scarf that my sister had given me. She created the scarf with information regarding our ancestor, Alford Bunkley of Georgia, our 3rd great-grandfather. He signed Georgia's Reconstruction Act Oath in order to vote in Georgia elections in 1867.


My great-great-great grandfather could have never predicted that a member of his family would one day hold federal office. But by the same token, none of us could have predicted the fear and the challenges brought on by the Trump administration and the Republican-controlled Congress over the past year.


While I have successfully worked with individual Republicans over the past year, the blunt truth is this: As long as the current leadership rules in Congress, our health care will not be safe, our voting rights will not be protected, and President Trump will not be held accountable for his words or actions.


That's why in the coming months, I am going to do everything possible to help elect new leaders to Congress. Our goal is a Democratic majority that will work for ALL of us, not just the wealthy and powerful -- and will do its duty to put a check on the Executive branch.
