Dear Hunter, Tonight's the night – the first of the highly anticipated presidential debates between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Experts are predicting that Americans will tune into the debate in unprecedented numbers. Regardless of your political views, whether you support one or none of the candidates, I think you will agree that these are tough times for our country. I recently came across a speech my dad gave at the University of Notre Dame in February 1968 – talk about tough times! Dad knew that so many Americans were anxious—the Vietnam War, racial tensions and more had caused deep divisions—when he spoke these words: “We need to make a national examination of conscience. Why do we need a national examination of conscience? Because suddenly we Americans seem to be panicking. It’s time to stop moaning and wringing our hands. It’s true, the country is in a crisis. But we have always been in a crisis. We ought to thank God we are. Because then we always have something to test us – like a piece of steel that stays strong precisely because it is enduring great pressure.” Dad was right – I think we emerged stronger from that period, and we will emerge stronger from this period, too. And the best way to ensure that happens is to stay true to our principles of freedom and justice for all. As you know, Save the Children Action Network (SCAN) has been fighting for justice for those who do not have a voice: kids. While investing in kids won’t fix all the complicated issues our nation faces, it is a down payment on our future. In fact, kids who participate in high-quality early education programs are more likely to finish high school, attend college and positively contribute to our society. Both candidates have talked about the issue. Two weeks ago, Trump gave a speech on his proposed plan to address the rising cost of childcare (https://t.e2ma.net/click/dek2gb/h9ytd/lkew3q). While Clinton’s plan is far more detailed, their proposals are an indication of the urgent need families face in affording high-quality childcare. But we are keeping the pressure on, launching a social media campaign (https://t.e2ma.net/click/dek2gb/h9ytd/1cfw3q) to get the candidates and debate moderator Lester Holt of NBC News to talk about early education tonight. I hope you will join us and help ensure that millions of kids are not left behind. Many thanks, as always, for your support. Please keep in touch. Warmly, Mark P.S.
