To subscribe, please sign up here (http://bit.ly/ecs1s) . ** Iran's Warning ------------------------------------------------------------ Iran’s Revolutionary Guards warned Saudi naval vessels taking part in military exercises in the Gulf today not to get close to Iranian waters, in a sign of heightened tensions between the two regional rivals, as Reuters reports (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-iran-saudi-military-idUSKCN125129?il=0) . Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Anthony Cordesman released an updated report yesterday: “Iran and the Gulf Military Balance (https://www.csis.org/analysis/iran-and-gulf-military-balance-1) .” ** Aleppo Airstrikes ------------------------------------------------------------ Syria’s military said today it will decrease airstrikes on Aleppo’s rebel-held areas after an international outcry over its Russian-backed bombardment of civilians over the past few weeks, as the Wall Street Journal’s Noam Raydan reported (http://www.wsj.com/articles/syrian-military-says-it-will-reduce-airstrikes-on-aleppo-1475699050) late this afternoon. Dive Deeper: CFR’s Gayle Tzemach Lemmon authored an op-ed late last week for CNN.com: “Aleppo: Where Children Die, but the World Does Nothing (http://www.cfr.org/syria/aleppo-children-die-but-world-does-nothing/p38365) .” And the Washington Institute’s Andrew Tabler appeared on WSJ Live (http://www.wsj.com/video/syria-violence-triggers-us-russia-talks-breakdown/A208D01E-73F0-4DE7-8D53-E261B0D03078.html) yesterday to discuss the ongoing tensions in Aleppo. Also an important read, USA Today’s Oren Dorell on “What Russia sending more air defense missiles to Syria means (http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2016/10/05/russia-aircraft-syria/91605608/) .” ** Next SecGen? ------------------------------------------------------------ The UN Security Council reached a surprisingly swift consensus today on its choice for the next secretary general of the United Nations: António Guterres, a former prime minister of Portugal, as the New York Times’ Somini Sengupta reports (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/06/world/americas/antonio-guterres-un-secretary-general-united-nations.html?_r=0) . Mr. Guterres will face a formal Council vote on Thursday morning and will then have his name submitted to the 193-member General Assembly for approval, which will most likely happen next week. ** Big Congrats ------------------------------------------------------------ To the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) for the launch of their new website (https://www.cnas.org/) . Check it out, it’s terrific! ** In That Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** 45 ------------------------------------------------------------ Percentage of Chinese people who see US power and influence as a major threat. Source: Deutsche Welle (http://m.dw.com/en/will-dutertes-temper-imperil-us-philippine-defense-ties/a-35962057) . ** One to Watch ------------------------------------------------------------ Beverly Kirk is a fellow and the deputy director for outreach in the CSIS International Security Program, as well as the program manager for the Smart Women, Smart Power Initative. Shane discusses his new book, Objective Troy: A Terrorist, a President and the Rise of the Drone. ** I Like It Like That ------------------------------------------------------------ I love the Esquire interview (http://cs.is/2dEu1UR) with The Young Turks’ Cenk Uygur, a man who truly understands the media landscape. ** Smiles ------------------------------------------------------------ I heard author Brett Easton Ellis (“Less than Zero,” “American Psycho”) and DJ/musician Moby on Ellis’s excellent podcast the other day discussing the great heartland pop star Bob Seeger. I don’t talk about Seeger lightly, I believe he is one of America’s great rock icons. And I have a lot of respect for Ellis and Moby when it comes to their opinions about rock and roll and pop music. They were talking about how Seeger was underappreciated, that his songs like “We’ve got tonight” bring tears to their eyes... Oh boy. Their analysis of Seeger got a bit too delicate for me and I yelled out loud to myself in my car, “C’mon Man!” Very few things in rock make me smile more than a hard driving, rollicking Bob Seeger track—“Traveling Man,” “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man” and “Rock and Roll Never Forgets” to name just a few. And then there’s my all-time favorite, Seeger’s live version of “Hollywood Nights (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_D4eUWBAE_A) ” from “Nine Tonight” which I listen to at full volume over and over. Often. “She stood there bright as the sun on that California coast/He was a Midwestern boy on his own/She looked at him with those soft eyes so innocent and blue/He knew right then he was too far from home…He was too far from home!!!” ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
