Some of our students have also served on informational panels to share their experiences with prospective families. The praise we hear from prospective families and students is resounding. Our students are truly the best ambassadors for the School, living embodiments of a Sidwell Friends education. On Wednesday afternoon, ninth period was set aside for student clubs to meet. Numerous clubs planned activities, set goals, and held discussions. All clubs are open to all students, and students may join at any point in the year. Please encourage your child to join a club and get involved in School life! All three divisions will be closed October 10 for our Fall Break; Upper School will be closed October 21 for teachers to write report cards. The first quarter ends October 20. This week, we continue our morning coffees with Upper School administration. I look forward to seeing parents of 12th graders Thursday morning and parents of 11th graders Friday morning. Warmly, Mamadou Mamadou Guèye Upper School Principal Announcements SPIRIT WEEK FACULTY/STAFF APPRECIATION: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Spirit Week is coming soon, and the Parents Association is planning something special to thank our terrific faculty and staff. On Friday, October 14, the PA will provide a “Granola Grab and Go” breakfast with granola cups, yogurt, fruit, and beverages in the faculty lounge. We’re looking for some volunteers to donate breakfast supplies and help with setup/cleanup the day of the event. If you can help, please sign up here: http://bit.ly/2cEW5Di. If you have any questions, please contact Robyn Alexander at robynalexchef@gmail.com or MaryAnn Nash at morrnash@gmail.com. ANINDYA DEHEJIA '78 INTERNSHIP PROGRAM Last year, Sidwell Friends launched the Anindya Dehejia '78 Internship Program, made possible by the Dehejia family to celebrate the memory of their son. The program supports unpaid summer internships for rising 12th graders. These internships are a wonderful, enriching opportunity for the students. If you work at an organization that would be interested in hosting a Sidwell Friends student intern or want to learn more about the program, please contact Robbie Gross in the Upper School at GrossR@sidwell.edu. Events EJC PARENT & GUARDIAN WORKSHOP: OCT. 17 EJC Parent & Guardian Workshop FlyerJoin parents and guardians from all divisions on October 17 at 7:00 p.m. for an equity, justice, and community parent and guardian workshop. This event will be introduced and facilitated by author, attorney, and activist Gyasi Ross; SFS Director of EJC Philip McAdoo; and members of the SFS Faculty EJC Council. At Sidwell Friends School, we are committed to finding ways to prepare our students for the challenges they will face beyond our community. We have begun to think about a strategic plan with a focus on building relationships, with careful attention to the following: What positives can come out of a greater focus on equity, justice, and community at SFS, and what concerns/issues do you foresee? If you could create this program, what would it look like, how would it operate, how would you feel about being part of it? What three wishes for the future do you have for equity, justice, and community at Sidwell Friends School? For more information about the program and Gyasi Ross, click here. We will offer light refreshments at 6:30 p.m. and start our program promptly at 7:00 p.m. To help our preparations, we ask that you register here if you plan to attend; however, all parents and guardians are welcome whether or not you register in advance. Free childcare will be available for school-age children. Please register for childcare at the link above as we have a limited number of slots. If you have questions about this event please contact your PA-EJC clerks or Philip McAdoo (mcadoop@sidwell.edu). PLaS WELCOME RECEPTION: OCT. 12 In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Parents of Latino Students (PLaS) Committee invites you to a Welcome Reception on Wednesday, October 12, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Cactus Cantina on Wisconsin Avenue. Come celebrate Hispanic Day, have some fun, and learn about our mission. Everyone is welcome! PLaS is an all-School committee that seeks to support students and families of Latino heritage and strengthen students' connection to their cultural heritage. We also want to include the broader SFS community in the celebration of our culture and traditions while creating awareness of our issues and concerns, including ways to augment students' Spanish language studies. All interested parents are welcome, regardless of race, ethnicity, or background. Please contact Veronica Valencia-Sarukhan if you have any questions at veronicavalenciaj@gmail.com. PARENT PEER GROUPS FACILITATOR TRAINING: OCT. 5 SFS has a unique, longstanding tradition of hosting Parent Peer Group Meetings to give parents an opportunity to get to know one another and discuss common non-academic, grade-specific issues in a friendly and supportive environment. The events, which are held twice a year, are led by parents for parents with an agenda determined by those attending. All parents, regardless of division, who are interested in facilitating Parent Peer Groups this year or just learning more about these opportunities are invited to attend the final, mandatory training session on October 5, 8:30-9:30 a.m. in the LS Quaker Meeting House on the Bethesda campus. Light refreshments will be served. We also strongly encourage anyone who has served as a facilitator in the past to attend this session if they did not attend the September 27 meeting. Questions? Please e-mail Alison Schafer (schafer.alison@gmail.com) or Alpa Chernof (chernof2276@gmail.com). PARENTS OF ASIAN STUDENTS BOOK CLUB: OCT. 18 Please join the Parents of Asian Students committee for our first-ever book club gathering and conversation. On Tuesday, October 18, at 7:00 p.m. in the Bernstein Drawing Room in Zartman House, we will discuss Celeste Ng's novel, "Everything I Never Told You," a literary thriller that focuses on the struggles of an Asian-American family in 1970s Ohio. The discussion will be moderated by Patricia Chu, Sidwell Friends parent and professor of English literature at George Washington University. All interested parents are welcome, regardless of race, ethnicity, or background. To RSVP (if you haven't already done so through Evite), please e-mail SidwellPASevite@gmail.com. GAMETIME!: OCT. 8 The next GAMETIME! is Saturday, October 8, when the football team takes on Potomac School. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m. In addition to the outstanding football team concession stand, we’ll have rally towels for fans of all ages. HOMECOMING: OCT. 15! Sidwell Friends Homecoming has something for everyone, whether you can come for 30 minutes or stay the day. Activities begin at 10:30 a.m. with our first All-Community Meeting for Worship of the school year, featuring a conversation about Quakerism with trustee and parent of alumni Michael Morfit and Head of School Bryan Garman. A period of reflection will follow. Michael’s article, Behind the Big Black Hat, was in the last issue of the Alumni Magazine. Childcare will be provided for school-age children who feel they would like to engage in some play and a service project (register here if your child would like to participate). At the rise of meeting (11:30 a.m.), many other activities will get underway. Varsity games start at 11:30 a.m. with girls' soccer, followed by volleyball and field hockey at noon, girls' tennis at 1:00, boys' soccer at 1:30, and football at 2:30. You can also see a printable schedule here. Tours of the Middle School guided by 8th grade students will be offered at 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. departing from the tents in the courtyard (priority will be given to visiting grandparents and friends). Food and fun activities are provided by student clubs, PBS, 8th and 4th graders, and the PA Arts Committee. The Fox Den will be open! The fabulous Next-to-New Sale, with thousands of items ready for bargain hunters, runs from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. All are welcome at Homecoming, and grandparents and friends are especially invited to experience this spirited and delicious celebration of our Sidwell Friends community. In addition to wearing your school colors, it is helpful to bring at least a little of that old-fashioned commodity, cash! GRANDPARENTS & FRIENDS HELP AT NEXT-TO-NEW SALE: OCT. 5 Grandparents and friends are invited to help organize the Next-to-New sale on Wednesday, October 5, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m in the Wannan Gym and then enjoy lunch in the dining room. Come for part or all of the time. We have jobs for folks who prefer to sit and for those who need to keep moving. Middle and Upper School students may be encouraged to stop by and say hello during their lunch period. If your child's grandparent or special friend would like to join us, or if you have questions, please e-mail volunteer@sidwell.edu. Parking is available for visitors in our garage; entrance is at the light on Wisconsin Avenue at Rodman Street. Parking near the Wannan Gym can be arranged as well. PHOTO RETAKES Upper School photo retakes will happen on October 5. If you’d like to have your child’s portrait retaken, please contact Crystal Matthews at MatthewsC@sidwell.edu. Other RE: THE COVER OF THE NEW DIRECTORY Curious about what exactly that is on the cover of the parent-student Directory you just received? It's not a shot from outer space--it's actually on Sidwell Friends property! For anyone who missed the caption on the inside front cover: For her senior project, Tessa Reagan '16 taught 1st graders how to take photos; Neel Prakash '27 spectacularly rose to the challenge with this shot inside a playground slide. ---Communications QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS “There has always been in the Society of Friends a group of persons pledged unswervingly to the ideal. To those who form this inner group, compromise is under no circumstance allowable. If there comes a collision between allegiance to the ideal and the holding of public office, then the office must be deserted. If obedience to the soul's vision involves eye or hand, houses or lands or life, they must be immediately surrendered. But there has always been as well another group who have held it to be equally imperative to work out their principles of life in the complex affairs of the community and the state, where to gain an end one must yield something; where to get on one must submit to existing conditions; and where to achieve ultimate triumph one must risk his ideals to the tender mercies of a world not yet ripe for them.” ---Rufus Jones, in Quakers in the American Colonies (1911). Quaker quotes alternate with questions about Quakerism in this newsletter feature. To ask a question about Quaker history or practice, e-mail our Sidwell Friends Quaker Life Committees’ authors at quakerquestions@sidwell.edu!
